Have all of you guys signed up for your Rutgers email accounts? As soon as Anita sent me my RU ID I went trolling around the website to see what kind of benefits I could get using that number
I stumbled upon the email set up and tried it out and it worked beautifully. I've had a Rutgers email for about 2 weeks now which effectively let me add Rutger Grad c/o 2012 to my facebook Profile (that's really the biggest perk). But if you haven't done so it's pretty simple.

I just did this yesterday. Took a while to find a username that wasn't taken and wasn't longer than 8 characters! I already have it hooked into my gmail and I'm ready to go.

Seems to be webmail.newark.rutgers.edu. webmail.rutgers.edu works too but you have to choose your campus when you get there.

Seems to be webmail.newark.rutgers.edu. webmail.rutgers.edu works too but you have to choose your campus when you get there.

Anyone have a plan to get their required 1L books?

Obviously they know exactly which books are required for classes, and they know exactly how much new ones cost. Are they expecting us to just go to the bookstore this summer and get the books for our section?

It's been a while since I've bought school books. But I know for undergrad and even grad school there were many classes that had a book but the professor didn't use it. I know this won't be the case for 1L. I'm sure we'll probably buy twice as many books and study aids than what's necessary.

I know they will be asking us which track we prefer and eventually telling us which section we're in and I know the campus bookstore has stacks of books separated by sections for 1L's so I would imagine that at some point this summer there will either be an all inclusive list of required books or each professor will list the required materials for his/her class.

Although I haven't specifically checked on the Rutgers website I have seen other law school websites where you can see which books are required for your section.

So we get our book assignments last week of July, orientation is 3rd week of august. That stuff sneaks up on you quickly.

But if they give you the section assignments the last week in july you better pretty much be moved into your place by the beginning of August otherwise it's going to be a tough couple of weeks in August. I'm sure the assignments they give us will probably only be about 4-5 hours of work but I'm guessing it'll take us 2-3 weeks

I came across this ad on Craigslist and I was wondering if anyone knows whether this area is a safe area? The property address is 751 Martin Luther King Blvd. Newark, NJ 07102 and the developer, TreeTop Development Corp., claims that this property and many of the buildings around this property have basically been renovated with brand new floors, ceramic tiles, new appliances, new fixtures, and state-of-the art security systems.

I've already looked at this location on Google Maps and I see that it is possible to walk from this property to campus and to Penn Station. The only question is, would you want to? Does anyone know if the area around this property is safe and whether the walk from this property to campus is actually a safe walk or do I need to put on a kevlar vest? Maybe a flak jacket?

I'm curious what would part-time students do then - who take classes in the evening and are not leaving the classroom until 8:30pm. Would it be safe to walk to a local apartment in Newark, to get to Ironbound somehow, or would it be best to take light rail/bus/train to Jersey City or Hoboken....

This property is a hop, skip, and jump away from High & Spruce (Blood territory), lol. High street is the original name of that street before it was renamed MLK Blvd. Spruce is the cross street. Straight hood. There is a Muslim mosque right next to a chicken and weed restaurant right there on the corner. Bangin freshly squeezed lemonade.

Not the worst part of Newark but definitely not the best. Depends on your standards and how you grew up. Funny thing is, take a 2-3 block walk towards school, and the scenery changes real quick, for the better.

Personally, I do not think you will be bothered one bit. Walking home from school, especially in the warmer weather, there will be a slew of your neighbors hanging out along MLK. Not to worry. That particular building, if I am not mistaken, is pretty good with putting a stop to loitering. It's amazing how they took a pic of that bldg without anyone lingering in the pic. Must have been taken at 6am. Worst comes to worst, bring your track shoes.

The inside actually looks decent. Just be cautious of high rises. You won't know who your neighbors are. I would imagine this would not mean much since being a law school student, you'd most likely spend the majority of your time between class and the law library.

Yeah, same here (PT class of 2013). I've been waffling A LOT between Rutgers-N and Seton Hall, but I think I've finally decided on Rutgers.

Thank God you guys have avoided Seton Hall. That toilet dropped 11 points in the rankings for 2010, the biggest plunge of any school in the #51 to #100 range. Word has really gotten out about what a cesspool that dump is.

Seton Hall is famous for placing people in NJTCC (NJ Traffic Court Clerkships). They inflate their employment numbers by 30-40% by dumping a good amount of losers into this sewer. Those TCC's pay a whopping 35 K and most of the judges are nasty, ignorant trolls who clawed & sucked their way up thru the corrupt NJ Democrat political machinery. My one friend said her judge never even learned her name all year- he called her "toots" and used to get loaded in his office and smoke cigarettes in there. Another buddy did a TCC and was unemployed for 16 months after it ended. He's now working in his dad's restaurant as a bartender. It's a complete lie that these judges can somehow "hook it up" with a decent gig once your TCC is done. News flash: these judges are total scum and could give a crap less if you live or die, much less waste their golf and hooker time trying to score a gig for some Seton Hall loser. The beauty of it is that Seton Hall gets to wash their hands of these grads and stick the traffic court judge with trying to find work for these losers.

Only a tiny fraction of top 5% gunners get real clerkships (federal and appellate) from SH. Most people I knew who didn't go the TCC route ended up in personal injury or insurance defense making well south of 50 K, or in dead-end temp doc review gigs which have now mostly been outsourced to India. About a dozen kids from my class are already out of law altogether. Most career counselors advise leaving a JD off your resume altogether since non-legal employers tend to hate lawyers and view them as nasty, dumb, and hard to get along with. So feature this: you waste 3 years and 100 K and a summer studying for the bar all to get a "credential" that you're told to leave off your resume! It's like a strech in jail or similar embarassment when you have a TTT school like SH as your alma mater!

Just check the attorney bios of the larger NJ firms like McCarter, Sills Cummis, Cozen, etc. Far fewer SH grads than you think ever get into these places. You'll need Top 5% and law review to have a shot at these NJ "biglaw" places. NYC you can totally forget about. No NYC firms even waste their time trolling SH since the school is in a shitty area and has declined so sharply in the rankings of late. By the time you guys get out it may well be 3rd tier, which is where it really belongs. Schools don't drop 11 points in the rankings for nothing. The word is out that this place is a scam and worthless diploma mill that charges Mercedes Benz prices for a rusted out Yugo with 4 flat tires. Very few SH grads will have anything one could call a "career." Almost 5 years out most of my buddies are still well below 75 K at crappy boiler-room firms like Stark & Stark (another grinder where SH also-rans go to be abused and degraded for 50 K or less doing fender-bender cases). I can't think of a worse way to spend 3 years than hanging around a dangerous, filthy dump like Newark listening to the washed-up drunken hacks and blowhards that pass for professors at this sewer blather on about fedual England's property law and other worthless dreck so you can come out heavily in debt and make 35 K as a traffic court clerk!

I really feel sorry for the night program kids at SH. These poor suckers are the "pack mules" that pay full freight so that Hobbs and his corrupt cronies can be more selective in the day program and "game the rankings." Bravo to US News for exposing this shameful fraud. SH is a pathetic diploma mill and I have no idea how the shysters and con men like Hobbs even sleep at night, much less carry on about "ethics" and other insincere posturing. Wait until you sit on a $17 hour doc review with half the class at SH, people with children and families who've had their lives destroyed by crushing debt and a non-existant job market. Put very simply, there are very few entry level legal jobs and salaries are shockingly lower than what you can imagine. Counting on making a dime more than 40 K out of SH is insane.

Rutgers places far better in both NJ and NYC, and is much cheaper than SH. There's really no reason for a dump like SH to even exist- they should just give the current students a refund and close the place down.

Employment prospects are better at RU, but that's not the real issue. SH tuition is just silly. At the same cost of attendance for both schools, I would not be able to understand why anyone would prefer SH over RU.

SH is still a solid school, but more than often I've seen people leave SH Law with a sense of feeling cheated - most SH grads end up clerking at local courts and many of them are conditioned to believe that this is a natural career path towards big law......

Apparently this is what Hobbs preaches? This is retarded. This path is only relevant for those who gain high profile clerk positions that ultimately add prestige to big law. Otherwise, why the hell would big law give any favor to someone who clerked for a low level municipal court?

The real issue is that Hobbs communicates this shit as a direct and normal path to big law, and knows very well that this is strategy hardly works.

Alternatively, he may genuinely believe that this is a accepted path towards big law - in which case he should just be fired.

Does anyone know what type of clerkships jobs the Rutgers grads do? It looks like about 30% of the class does clerkships and I'm hoping at least half of those are quality clerkships jobs.

what do you mean "which track " we will be in?

In addition to Part Time/Full time, and class sections there are also tracks. Late and Early. Early track classes start at 830 late track classes start at 955. Obviously if you start earlier you'll end earlier. I think late track gets out around 445. But everyone is out by noon or so on Fridays.
Sometime soon they'll be sending you a request for whether or not you want early track or late track. Most people get their choice of track. But if you live on campus expect that you may not get into the late track over someone that is commuting. But you don't get a choice of section.
