Schlam, I've read some mediocre reviews about the air. A lot of people say it's way overpriced for what you get. I like the solid state drive that it uses, and it is insanely light, but I'm a poor. I will definitely drool over yours if you get one, regardless of some negative reviews. It is really nice to look at (and probably to carry, as well).

Do we have to have a Mac? I haven't even read the tech requirements yet, but I just got a new PC laptop less than a year ago! I really don't want to buy another one.

Re: Cornell Class of 2012
I saw an article on the internet with a list of ten reasons to wait to get the macbook air. one of the reasons was that mac may be making them with 3G network!! I don't know if I can wait though...schlam wrote:i'm considering the macbook air since i'll be lugging it around so much.vtha wrote:new question. considering that I am super bored at work right now. Has anyone thought about what laptop they are going to buy?

Anyone planning on having two? I already have a macbook from college, was thinking about getting a netbook or something to carry around to class because they're a lot lighter... The macbook actually isn't that light =/

on a different topic: did anyone find out whether cornell's 25% GPA was transposed from 3.42 to 3.24 (or whatever the exact number was)?

I have a hard time believing that any laptop is prohibitively heavy. Are you small? Do you carry it a handbag?treschic wrote:Anyone planning on having two? Haha, it's not prohibitively heavy but it's the weight of a good sized textbook. Add that with a couple other good sized textbooks and a far walk, it may be worth it having a netbook considering they're also smaller in dimension and only a few hundred bucks, compared to say, getting a Macbook Air. I got my macbook a few years ago, so it's heavier than the ones currently out -- I think the new ones are 4.5 lbs or something. Since mine's still in pretty good shape, I don't see a need to replace it with something else for a primary computer. And yes, I am female and "small" and do on occasion carry handbags.

I see what u are saying but we also get lockers so that cuts down on having to carry too many books, but from what I hear everyone that buys an small notebook loves it.

I'm a big fan of the netbook. I really like the one I have now (not love, because i reserve that for macs
) They're super light and small, and I know I'll be lugging around plenty of weight in books.
Plus, they're so cheap ($200-600) that if anything happens you just buy a new one. the SSD is so small I store all my stuff on the internet anyway.
The biggest problem I foresee is taking exams, I run linux on mine (it's speedy) and most exam software is for windoze/mac, plus you need an external drive to install anything from disc, and they DO NOT have enough power to play DVDs, mine just barely manages hulu.

Re: Cornell Class of 2012
i don't know what to do in terms of laptops... originally, i was thinking of getting a lenovo (12.1" screen) because it's super light, but i would have to buy an external cd/dvd drive. then, after my cornell visit, i started thinking of getting a macbook, simply because i hate having to worry about anti-virus and Vista issues on PCs.
either way, i can get Office 2007 from my job for $20, so it cuts down the cost of getting a new laptop.... now all i have to worry about is what laptop to choose
PS - Do you really need a netID? I tried the first link on the Computing Requirements page, and it didn't ask for one...

You don't need a net ID to buy a laptop but I know that Apple offers discounts to students form Cornell, and for that you proabbly do need your net ID
