He is whiny and melodramatic. And hyper-competitive, and he neglects his wife the whole first semester. That book is a great example of how NOT to do 1L fall semester (i.e. don't be a gunner, not even in disguise, as it's a big waste of time and your life will suck). Scott Turow's a great writer, but I would not want to have met him during that semester.thesealocust wrote: I'm reading One L again, and I have to say, knowing more about what LS will actually be like than the first time I read it, Scott Turrow is way more whiny and melodramatic than I had remembered.

Is NTC (which appears to be required at Ivy Gardens) as bad as stories such as this indicate (http://www.collegiatetimes.com/stories/9550)? Can you setup a wireless router? Even if not to save money, I'd like to be able to use my internet throughout the apartment.

I actually have multiple computers, too, that I'd like to use. Is that an issue with NTC?

If i select "i would like to pay the interest on my unsubsidized loan" on stafford application for Discover, that doesn't lock me in to having pay all the interest, just gives me the option to, like i can still defer later right?

Does anyone else think the 8.25% rate on GradPlus is a bit high?

I like how the loan counseling session states that Grad Plus has a "low fixed rate" and lists that as an answer choice.

i talked to last year's pila president at one of the ASW's. i recognized her face from the website (is that creepy?). she was so receptive and her enthusiasm makes me so psyched to be a part of it.FeElMyEiRe wrote:PILA all the way baby, those of us who consciously make the decision to remain poor unite!

Does anyone know if we can pay back loan money we don't use at the end of the year? Or would we just take out less next time and use the leftover?
I am hoping not to spend it all, but I took it just in case. I am a newb to this so any help would be appreciated.

From my Stafford MPN spec, I gathered that you can repay whenever you want and they will only charge you interest on what you haven't yet repaid.limegreen wrote:Does anyone know if we can pay back loan money we don't use at the end of the year? What about GradPlus, wouldn't it be better to repay those first if I have some money left over, because they have a higher interest rate? I have no idea what I'm talking about.CE2JD wrote:From my Stafford MPN spec, I gathered that you can repay whenever you want and they will only charge you interest on what you haven't yet repaid.limegreen wrote:Does anyone know if we can pay back loan money we don't use at the end of the year? $1700 for the Dell bundle?! I hadn't checked it out but that's downright ludicrous

Re: UVA Class of 2012
The government only pays the interest of your *subsidized* Stafford loans while you're in school, which is only 8,500 of my 20,500 in Stafford loans. So for $12,000 of your Stafford loans (assuming you took out the max) you'll be paying interest while you're in school.thesealocust wrote:You can repay any amount you want, any time you want, at no penalty. The only issue is there is sometimes a flat fee to take out grad plus money, 3 or 4%? Which you would be out if you just repayed early.
But yes, you should repay those first - less because the interest rate is higher and more because the govt pays interest on your stafford loans while you're in school.

Re: UVA Class of 2012
So I sent in my second deposit and got this as part of the response
Please remember that American Bar Association standards require that we receive a final, official copy of your undergraduate transcript showing receipt of your degree. We must receive this official transcript by August 1 so please have this sent well in advance of that deadline. The copy supplied to us as part of your LSDAS report does not satisfy this requirement.
I've send them two official transcripts since I graduated, since my LSDAS transcript was sent while I was still in school. I sent the first to show my continued interest in the school, and the second transcript after getting that exact same message when I sent in the first deposit. I'm starting to think they simply haven't bothered updating their records of who has sent in transcripts after graduating. Thoughts?

I got the same message, and I sent in my transcript awhile ago. It's definitely just a form email. However, I am wondering if they're ever going to tell us when they receive our transcripts- I would hate to go to orientation and have them be like, oh, sorry, we never got your transcript- try again next year!

I was going to say the same thing, that it's probably an automated response that everyone gets. I sent a transcript request to my undergrad today. If July comes around and I haven't heard anything, I'm just going to call the office to confirm.

Re: UVA Class of 2012
I got that message with both my deposits a few months and I had sent them my transcript back in October... I'm still half-way tempted to send them another transcript just to be sure. (Sadly for us UVA grads, that's a $5 fee to have the transcript sent 2 blocks)Jim_Stansel wrote:I was going to say the same thing, that it's probably an automated response that everyone gets.
