You should probably call the law school and ask.waitingforanswers wrote:I have an interesting situation I need some help with. As part of a fellowship I'm doing at my undergraduate university for the year (I deferred law school till Summer 2010), I have the opportunity to take one class per semester at any of its graduate schools, including its law school. Would Michigan accept credits from another law school before I've taken any credits at Michigan itself? Also, would those credits transfer as actual grades or as P/F? Assuming it transfers as a P/F, it seems like a way to get adjusted to law school classes without risking my grades much. Is there a reason I should or should not consider doing this?

Re: Michigan 2012
I doubt Michigan would take credits from another law school before you matriculate here. 1) Since you aren't a transfer, your doctrinal classes probably wouldn't be accepted and Michigan would make you take them here anyway as part of the standard 1L curriculum. 2) Which law school classes would you take at the other school? Are you permitted to take upper-level law classes without first taking any doctrinal classes?
It could be interesting for you to experience a law school class, but I'd say you should probably just wait and take classes in another graduate school during your fellowship, since you might not get credit for one taken in the law school, and you'd have to retake any doctrinal courses anyway. Michigan doesn't allow any pass/fails for classes in the first year curriculum, so if you took one of those as part of your fellowship, I'm almost sure you would not be able to claim pass/fail credit for them on your Michigan transcript.
I got all this from the registrar's office website, but you should definitely call as per PKSebben's advice.

In the situation that you're asking about, the answer to this is almost certainly no. The academic regs only allow credit from other law schools for: (1) transfer admits (provisional advanced standing students, as the regs call them); or (2) second and third year students who get permission from the law school to take courses in other departments of UM or at another law schools. So if you take these hours prior to enrollment at Michigan, you can only transfer them if you're admitted as a transfer student. Otherwise, you can't receive credit for classes at other schools until you're enrolled here, have finished 1L, and get permission to take the external credits. There is also the regulation that states that you have to complete all credit for the degree within five years after your "first enrollment" in the law school. For transfers, they count this as the date you first enrolled in your original law school. Since you will almost certainly not be "enrolled" in the law school wherever you are by virtue of just guest auditing a few classes there, the rules also appear to exclude these credits because you would have taken them before you enrolled in any law school.waitingforanswers wrote:Would Michigan accept credits from another law school before I've taken any credits at Michigan itself?

I thought I remembered reading something in the acceptance documents actually forbidding people from taking courses (even not for credit) at other schools prior to starting U Mich. I was pretty surprised and wondered why they'd care.

Okay, for any Mystery Science Theater fans:
On Thursday, all across the country, theaters are doing a showing of Plan 9 from Outer Space with a RiffTrax commentary playing (similar to MST3k and from the same guys). I'll be going, since they're showing it at the Goodrich theater. It should be pretty fun, so let me know if you want to go.

Awesome. I just checked and the tickets are a bit pricey (12.50 or so, reminds me of LA) but I think it'll be worth it. And yes, the 20th at 8:00.PKSebben wrote:Next thursday? I would likely be down for that, dude. Rifftrax are great.

Maan, you're a purist. I never really got into Joel because the old episodes were rarely on TV.
I'll watch Deadly Mantis and Riding with Death any day.

So when are we doing registration for classes, anyway? Is that something that happens once we get there?
Also, about the airport shuttle: I'm getting to the airport in Detroit around 4 PM on Friday, August 21st. Anyone want to split a shuttle with me? For example, this one ( http://annarborairportshuttle.net/4.html ) would be about 20 bucks each for two people.

You don't do registration as a first semester 1L. They just put you in your section and wolverine access will display what classes you've been registered for. If it's not there already, then sometime next week (or even over the weekend possibly, as the registrar definitely works weekends sometimes, like when grades are being posted).

So...do Michigan students take many spontaneous trips to Canada? I was reading on the MI Sec'y of State page that Michigan has an "enhanced" driver's license for passport-less land crossings into Canada...
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
