SWEEEET!!!!! I really almost moved into the Ironbound just because of all the restaurants. I only ate at a few...but I was torn. But ultimately I've decided against it just because I want a change of scenery from Newark after spending the better part of my day in the law school I think I'll just want to get away.

Those new buildings are not as expensive as I thought they would be. If they were in JC they'd probably be almost twice what they are in Newark. I also considered some of those new houses popping up. But then I went to JC and discovered all those brownstones and thought I could have the best of both worlds. Fairly affordable housing close to Newark and NYC and in a great neighborhood. I like the idea of being able to go and walk around downtown JC--that didn't really seem like an option if I lived in Newark. I feel like I'd be more limited. But I'll definitely be in the Ironbound for dinner!!!

addendum do you live in Newark for school now? are you going to rutgers for law school?
I almost wish RU and SHU swapped places. Across from Don Pepe = awesome.
I can't wait to hit up the Brazilian restaurants in Ironbound. We have a few Brazilian BBQ spots here in Los Angeles and they're AMAZING. Are there going to be "bar review" (bar-hopping) socials with SHU Law students? If so, do the law students go bar-hopping in Jersey or in NYC?

The only reason I ask is because many of my friends are current law students here in Los Angeles and they have bar-hopping mixers/socials where they invite law students from UCLA, USC, Loyola, and Pepperdine. I actually attended one of the "bar reviews" and it was a lot of fun.

@jpasqu1--I think the distance between RU and SHU is pretty negligible. You shouldn't have any problem hitting up the DP  They're both in the same part of Newark just on opposites sides of Broad st. People seem to pick on RU about being in a bad neigborhood but forget that Seton's in the same spot.
to that affect...
@Fiat--I bet the RU and SH law students run into each other frequently if they don't specifically plan times to do 'bar review' and bar hopping. I have a bunch of friends that work in Manhattan and frequently hang out and go to bars there and they said a lot of Rutgers students live and play in the city. So I'm sure the proximity and ease of getting into NYC lends itself to a lot of activities there (for students at both schools)

How long is that commute? An hour and fifteen, or so?

I can't wait to move out there. I'm getting pretty tired of Southern California. But I doubt I'll be singing this tune come winter time when it's still sunny and warm here in Los Angeles.

To Manhattan, yes and no. From Newark Penn Station to the WTC it's about that, and a little longer to Midtown because you have to change. But I took it that holmesNYC is coming from Brooklyn which is further out.

It took me an hour, door to door. I'm not too far into Brooklyn so the train rides are pretty short. The transfers are the annoying part.

For those not from NJ (and not living on-campus) when are you planning on moving?

I still don't have a place to live so I'm going to take some time off work in mid-late June and try and get a place and try to get a lease for mid-july. I'd like to be settled by the end of July.

I'll be moving to NJ from Los Angeles around mid-to-late July. Ideally, I'd like to sign a lease around mid-July and move to NJ during the last week of July. If the housing market is simply too competitive for this, I'd be happy to move there earlier. I'm primarily interested in finding a 1 bedroom or studio apartment near the Journal Square PATH station (Jersey City). I'd really prefer to not have a roommate. I'm not really interested in Newark because I've heard really bad stories about how dangerous it is. The only part of Newark I'd be interested in would be Ironbound, I've heard it's basically the safest area that Newark has to offer.

I'm driving to NJ last week of May. I'm staying with family and I will search for a place and sign a lease as soon as I find acceptable accommodations. I plan to live outside Newark, probably in South Orange or thereabouts. I don't want a roommate, I need my space.

Does anyone know if there's a deadline for submitting the 12-month lease to RU-N so that out-of-staters qualify for in-state tuition? To be the best of my knowledge, August 1st is the latest you can start your lease but I don't know if there's a deadline for the actual submission of that lease.

That's a good question, I would figure it needs to be done before your tuition is processed, at the latest. Dean Walton switched me to instate recently, and she said she just needed to alter something or other to reflect instate status. The sooner, the better of course.

Congratulations on a wise decision to choose Rutgers over the SETON HALL LAW TOILET.

I know several Rutgers Law grads who speak fondly of their school. I know zero SETON HALL LAW TOILET grads who don't despise their school.

Let's not disparage another school. Especially one in such close proximity to our own. It is likely we will be working with Seton Hall grads one day.

I suspect that's a disgruntled Seton Hall Law alum or just a random troll. Either way, I agree with you 100%. It doesn't make any sense to burn any bridges with people who are likely to be our future colleagues. I applied to Seton Hall Law, was accepted with a $10k renewable Dean's Scholarship, but respectfully declined. Personally, I think Seton Hall is a wonderful school and is a great choice for anyone seeking a strong legal education with great prospects in the mid-Atlantic region. I wish SHU Law Class of '12 nothing but the best. I expect to be bumping into them in the Ironbound area quite a bit.

Does anyone know when we should be getting our financial aid packages? This delay is unusual even with the state budge issues....

Hi everyone
We should be getting our financial award letters this week. How do I know? I just logged in into "check required documents" option on http://www.studentaid.rutgers.edu/ and it said that my award letter was generated on 05/15/09. I am assuming everyone else’s award letter was completed at about the same time. I spoke to financial aid office and was told that once the award letters are generated we should be getting them within a week. By the way, if you haven't yet, use the link I provided above to check online your initial offers, required documents which have to be submitted, and award status, which is not yet available online but will be soon and etc, it’s a very useful link. I myself can’t wait to meet your all and to start my law school journey. I will be driving from Brooklyn (Sunset Park area) to school and back to Brooklyn everyday. If anyone is interested in carpooling with me please let me know. I did a test run and it took me only 35 minutes to get to law school from Sunset Park. I will be leaving my apartment at around 7:30am; I can pick you up if you live on my way to school. I will charge $5 per person each way so if you are interested let me know.

PS: Does anyone know if we will be getting any assignments prior to the start of Minority Student Program two week orientation and how many hours a day does the two week orientation program require. Is it like a full blown 2 week semester or just a simple 2 week orientation?

Thanks so much for posting the information. I checked my status on the link above and I'm showing the same message that my award letter was produced on 5/15/09. Thankfully, I don't have any documents that I'm required to return to the university at this time except the Federal Work Study offer that I'm probably going to decline. Hopefully, we get the financial aid packets in the mail soon so we can complete any other required documentation such as promissary notes.

The initial tuition bill goes out sometime in July if you have not turned your lease in saying you are living in NJ by then you will be billed as an out of state student. However, you can still turn it in befor Aug 24 (the first day of class). They will have to resubmit your bill and it will be a little more of a pain in the butt. However, the first day of class is technically the last day you can receive the in-state waiver for the first semester. After the first day of class then you will have to wait until spring semester to see the discount.

Have all of you guys signed up for your Rutgers email accounts? As soon as Anita sent me my RU ID I went trolling around the website to see what kind of benefits I could get using that number :)
I stumbled upon the email set up and tried it out and it worked beautifully. I've had a Rutgers email for about 2 weeks now which effectively let me add Rutger Grad c/o 2012 to my facebook Profile (that's really the biggest perk). But if you haven't done so it's pretty simple.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
