I stayed in one of those extended stay hotels during ASW and it was only $21 a night on priceline and wasn't very far from the school. That might be an option if you're stuck.

A couple of people asked for the name of the trucking company I had used in the past to ship my car. After much searching, I was unable to find the name of it. Sorry guys. I will need to ship my car back to the East Coast, though, so I will keep looking around my cluttered home for the old invoice. If I find anything, I will post it.

Is anyone looking at apartments at Colonial Village at Deerfield? (I am totally sold on the screened porches.)

Definitely. I think I'm deciding between Deerfield and Pinnacle Ridge. Pros/cons of each:

Pinnacle is a little better for grocery shopping, etc., but Deerfield is right in Duke forest and kinda has a nice, secluded feel. It's also right down the road from the law school. Chapel Hill and downtown Durham are more or less the same to get to (time-wise) from either complex. (Technically, downtown Durham is slightly easier from Deerfield, and CH is a little easier from Pinnacle.) Deerfield feels like being in the country; Pinnacle feels like being in the 'burbs. As an avid cyclist, I prefer Pinnacle's setting b/c Erwin and 751 are great launching spots for rides (or a quick ride to the law school).

Is it an easy bike ride from Pinnacle to the Law School? I'm thinking of getting a bike since I can't stand the idea of driving to class...

I guess i would say..."define easy"...

It's definitely do-able from Pinnacle, but i think it would be miserable if that's your primary mode of transport everyday. It's far enough that it's not like riding across campus or something and the shoulder is narrow for biking. People do it, but i always feel bad for them. I love Pinnacle and think it's probably the best choice for law students, but if you want to bike everyday i'd say it's probably worth looking at Belmont or the lofts, though the latter is expensive.

Also... it sounds like a lot of 1Ls will be at Pinnacle Ridge (I know I will be!), and you'll likely be able to carpool with people in your section if you don't want to bike everyday.

I mean, I'm going to have a car, but I really hate the idea of biking to the athletic center and things like that. I would bike to class on really nice days. I already have my place at Pinnacle, so it's not a priority. I'm just debating whether to invest in the bike or not.

Any recommendations for the latest I should drive/fly there so that there will still be some nice available apartments in the area for me to reserve/rent?

Also what's the consensus on which are the best apartment complexes (top 5)?

We get the actual picture ID during orientation. You should have already received the ID number on that little sheet from OIT which had your email info on it. The ID number should be good enough for what you're talking about, I think.

Does anyone know if it is possible for Fall-Starters to get on the Duke insurance plan earlier than August 1?

Yeah I meant the ID Number, not the actual student ID cards. Thanks!

From what I found it sounds unlikely. I would call and ask if it's a big deal for you.

The most relevant thing I found reads:
2009-2010 Health Insurance: All Duke students are required to have medical insurance - either through the Duke-sponsored plan or a comparable medical insurance plan based in the United States. If you are arriving August 1, 2009 or later, you may enroll in the Duke Student Medical Insurance Plan (SMIP) which will be through United Healthcare Student Resources.

The Duke Student Medical Insurance policy year will run from August 1, 2009 to July 31, 2010. If you are a new student, please contact your department or school if you are required by Duke to be on campus before the start of the policy and will not have any other coverage.

For more information on the 09/10 Duke Student Medical Insurance Plan (SMIP), follow the link to the Duke SMIP Benefits Brochure and the Online Waiver and Enrollment Form.

If you are arriving at Duke for school related activities prior to the start of the 09/10 Duke Plan year and need to secure early insurance coverage (for individual and/or dependent plans), you may be eligible to enroll in the remaining portion of the 08/09 Duke SMIP.

Let us know what you find out.

If what you need is coverage just over the summer and were previously covered by a school/work sponsored plan, you can always enroll in any short-term plan to bridge the gap. I have one through Assurant, and the rates are very reasonable for the level of coverage I get.

Be VERY careful with short-term plans. Most of them have fine-print which basically renders them useless, especially if you have a pre-existing condition.

I think I should be okay. I will probably be insured through work through the end of July, but a couple of days of overlap would be ideal. I will post what I find out from the Duke Insurance wizards.

I'm planning on visiting Colonial Village at Deerfield and Pinnacle Ridge this weekend (maybe even this afternoon). If anyone has anything they want me to look out for or to ask and report back, let me know.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
