Re: Michigan 2012
There are plenty of apartments near the school. I think they're pretty ghetto, for the most part, because they're just houses divided into like 12 apartments. There are a ton of apts on the bus lines, though. The bus system in AA is pretty good.Does anyone know about apartments available within walking distance of the school?

PK... what did you think of our first class today? Good, eh?
I hope he will let us go early for the inauguration.

Re: Michigan 2012
I hate that people call it the ghetto. By no means are they glamorous, but by and large they aren't awful either. I've lived in a house and an apartment in a house (both times in a HUGE room for under $550 a month) and people would always comment about how nice a place it was.PKSebben wrote:There are plenty of apartments near the school. I think I'd hate to be 2-3 miles away, even if my apt was incredible.
And, besides the ghetto, there are about 4 luxury apt buildings that have gone up / are going up, at an average of about $1,000 a pop on the low end.

Just got my scholarship offer! Dean's Scholarship for $10,000/year
I wasn't expecting to hear anything from them until February, so this is a nice surprise.

Just got my Dean's Scholarship note! Not going into specifics, but it's pretty darn generous considering I applied EARLY DECISION. Michigan is such an awesome school.

Does Michigan offer financial assistance for travel to the ASW?

Re: Michigan 2012
is it possible to sign a lease on an apartment that starts end of august (pro-rated)? orientation week starts aug. 24th, so a september lease won't cut it, esp. since I'm bringing a lot of stuff and have cats so staying in a hotel or something won't do. thoughts? obviously people deal with this every year, i just wanted to make sure.

It's possible to get one that starts on august. But the only hitch is that they're usually 12 month leases.

Right now there are a lot of houses that have signs that say Aug to Aug leases in the Hill Street area.

I got my acceptance in the mail yesterday for the summer start. Michigan is near the top of my list so I'm definitely thinking about one of the ASWs. Any current students who were summer starters? I'm curious to hear about that experience.

Those are fancy indeed, but holy crap are they expensive! To put it in perspective, that's more than I used to pay for my apartment in Manhattan (and I lived in Chelsea).Vail67 wrote:These apartments are making me want to go to Michigan. I rent a 2-br house (y'know, with a yard and washer/dryer and full basement and driveway, etc.) for $1000/mo. It's in a beautiful neighborhood on the Old West Side. eta: that's less than 1 1/2 miles to the Law Quad, a simple bike ride and on the bus line.
I totally understand that some people want to pay a premium to live super-close, but that's quite a premium.

I should also add that when you're dealing with private landlords and out of the immediate Central Campus clusterfuck, things tend to be a lot more flexible wrt moving dates, terms, the works. For example, my landlady let me just go month to month after my last lease expired so I could plan on staying here to study for the bar but could still have the flexibility to leave when I need to.

Rent stabilization, my friend. I lived in a beautiful building on 23rd and 7th (right across from the Chelsea Hotel). It was a studio, but it sure wasn't a shithole.neverborn wrote:what kind of shithole did you live in Manhattan? that seems like a stretch..scarletmuse wrote:Those are fancy indeed, but holy crap are they expensive!
