Robby Cano, can you msg the admin of that facebook group and ask him to send requests to people who had deferred from last year? I feel like a forgotten stepchild, no invites to ASW, no Facebook groups...

im pretty sure i will be going to northwestern in the fall. i noticed some of you talking about housing. i checked out the student space link that NU has on the admitted students page and it was pretty helpful. one thing i noticed after looking at a bunch of different apartments online was that some buildings pay for heat/gas/electricity. those buildings seem like a good deal to me, but maybe thats because im from california. anyway...im sure ill meet some of you in april.

I received the folio NW sends out with all the admitted students info inside. I thought a very nice touch. Different (and nicer) than the acceptance packages I've been receiving from the other schools I've gotten into.

Hi everyone! I'm really excited about NU, but also a little worried about moving to Chicago. I have a dog and don't want to leave it behind, but it seems like all the housing is high rise apartment type stuff... not very dog friendly.
The school seems so awesome though.

If you join the facebook group there is a post relating to this. Credit goes to the original poster.Elms wrote:Hi everyone! Chicago is a wonderful place to have a dog and is really dog friendly. That said, I found that finding dog-friendly housing in Streeterville was challenging. Most of the Streeterville highrises do not allow dogs and I found that the few that did were the most expensive. Also, student space did not have a lot of experience with finding dog friendly apartments. I eventually found my 1L apartment on craigslist (on Wabash near Chicago Ave in a slightly older walk up building). This year I have moved up to Lincoln Park and am renting from an individual condo owner in a very dog-friendly building--which I love and would recommend to anyone.

Almost everyone in my high rise has a dog and I live about 15 mins. walk from NU law. And visiting friends in other condos, I've noticed plenty of dogs. It won't be a problem.Elms wrote:Hi everyone! Re: Northwestern 2012
I think the important nugget above w/r/t renting in a dog-friendly building is finding a condo rental, which, given the real estate market these days, should not be a problem.
For various reasons, apartment management companies in Chicago (and landlords generally) just don't like dogs. On the other hand, condo owners themselves are responsible for managing their buildings. Since so many of them own dogs, many condo buildings -- including, and I'd even say especially -- high rises -- allow -- I'd even say encourage -- dogs. it's always weird for me to get into an elevator with not one, but two or three people with their dogs. But it happens all the time.
Most of the housing in the immediate area around NU law is gonna be high-rise and most are condos. Craigslist, as always, will be your BFF. You don't need to confine yourself to any specific neighborhood and I vehemently recommend against any apartment rental service. They truly are a waste of money and will direct you to a very limited group of properties, usually large buidlings operated by the same dog-unfriendly management companies discussed above. Paying a premium in exchange for limiting your selection is just stupid, IMHO.
Anyway, no worries about bringing your dog to Chicago. There really has been a boom in dog ownership over the last 2-3 years -- it seems that every 20something professional has a dog. You'll have plenty of company.
Since we're on the topic of housing, any Chicago people here thinking of relocating to Streeterville to reduce your commute? I'm in the Wicker Park/Bucktown area. Maybe I'm spoiled when it comes to commuting, or just biased against taking the bus, but that bus transfer from the blue line in weather like we've had over the last few months: don't wanna do it.

Not true at all!For various reasons, apartment management companies in Chicago (and landlords generally) just don't like dogs.
I can name at least three buildings within a 5 minute walk of the school that allow dogs. If you are willing to live within a bus/el ride rather than walking distance, there are dozens.

Looks like I'm headed to NU this fall! Where the heck does everyone live? Is there anything to do in Streeterville?

AWESOME. I was rooting for you. Congrats!69sofine wrote:Looks like I'm headed to NU this fall! Where the heck does everyone live? Is there anything to do in Streeterville?
Not a ton to do in Streeterville, but Michigan Avenue and the Viagra Triangle are right nearby. Streeterville is very residential--incredibly cool neighborhood, but not a huge nightlife scene actually in the neighborhood.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
