Is anybody planning on taking a trip to DC for fun before classes start? I've never been so I was thinking about it.

Lemme check myself - there are indeed black bears in the mountains. I didn't know they creeped that far south.

The mountains were probably the largest factor in my decision-making process. I also called and asked to move in mid-July so I can have a full month of the outdoors before we start school. Count me in!iceberger wrote:anybody plan on doing any hiking/outdoors type things in charlottesville before law school starts? Edit: My boyfriend used to live in the area and claims he came upon several black bears when hiking alone and they just ran off when he made a lot of noise while backing away slowly. When I was in Wyoming a ranger would constantly "Whoop Whoop" whenever going around a bend...I think I'd prefer mauling by bear than the constant banter of a 50 year old woman...

I encountered black bears a couple of times when I worked in the woods in Wisconsin. They ran away. They're pretty small and generally not aggressive (if you don't screw with them at least).JSUVA2012 wrote:Lemme check myself - there are indeed black bears in the mountains. Then you should be able to walk over a sturdy rock formation then get back into your car and get some Burger King without a problem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UpSlpvb1isJSUVA2012 wrote:Yeah, I watch a lot of Man vs. Wild, so I'm sure I'll be okay.Jim_Stansel wrote:I encountered black bears a couple of times when I worked in the woods in Wisconsin. You better watch Survivorman if you want any chance of making it out of the Blue Ridge alive.

I'm from that area, so if anyone wants to do a day or weekend trip down there I'd be happy to tag along and show you around. I am going to be in Cville for the summer but plan on coming back here occasionally for some boating and such that I don't think I'll get to do in the mountains.showNprove wrote:I'm actually considering a weekend trip to VA Beach. Re: UVA Class of 2012
Everyone here is probably going to think I'm an idiot, but I have a few really stupid financial aid questions I hope someone can answer.
1) Do we have to take out the full amount?
2) If I don't spend all the money for the given semester or year or however it's divided (I haven't gotten mine yet), what do I do with what's left over? Keep it for summer expenses if I don't get a paying gig? Or pay it back and not accrue more interest?
3) If I don't take out the full amount and run out of money, can I get more?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me. I've never had a student loan before (yay for parents and cheap in state tuition in VA), so I'm lost.

I am totally up for a trip, sounds fun. I've never been to that area of the country (except for ASD) so I'm up for seeing whatever, whenever.limegreen wrote:I'm from that area, so if anyone wants to do a day or weekend trip down there I'd be happy to tag along and show you around. I don't know the answers to all of your questions, but I'm pretty sure you can decline some of the loans. You financial aid so far just shows you what you have been approved for and offered. You have to then go and accept your financial aid - which is where you can decline some of it if you want to.
The others I have no clue, although I would think that you could get more money if you run out, maybe it'll be private lenders though and not through the government program.

Re: UVA Class of 2012
Thanks jdn and sealocust, BTW, love the new tar. I might be making the hour drive this weekend for a burrito, I haven't had one in far too long (a week).
If anyone else has any helpful tips for a financial aid newb I would appreciate it greatly. I guess I should probably start by making a budget for my living expenses and see how that compares to the school's.
Also, on my FAFSA I reported that my parents helped me last year with I think about $800 dollars a month. I think that my Mom is going to continue to do this in the form of paying my very low limit credit card bill that I use for food and gas and cell phone bill, do I have to report this or anything like that?

Re: UVA Class of 2012
Has anyone made a living expenses spreadsheet or anything similar? I don't know how they are coming up with 15,000. I am living in one of the more expensive apartment complexes and I am still only getting around $12,000. Also, is their number supposed to be for 12 months or for 9, cause that might be my problem?

Re: UVA Class of 2012
So, are GradPlus loans actually distributed through a number of different entities? How do you get more info on where the money comes from? There's pretty much ZERO information on wtf you are accepting on the SIS website.thesealocust wrote:1) Nope! Totally discretionary. 2) To my knowledge, you take out as much as you want, you get the money, and then it's up to you - they just tell you when payments are due. Make sure you investigate repayment - some loans have penalties if you try to pay it back too fast.
3) This I don't know about, but I think it would be difficult.
If there is no penalty for early repayment, taking the full amount out seems to be the wisest decision.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
