Re: UVA Class of 2012
Before I say anything I want to admit my total lack of knowledge about financial aid and loans in general,
but since everyone is talking about cost of attendance and total debt and these numbers seem to be getting astronomical,
I was just wondering if anyone else thought that the COL estimates that law schools use seem abnormally high.
For 2008-2009 living expenses are estimated at $15,700 and books and supplies at $2,600.
I highly doubt that I am going to spend close to this amount. I base this also on the fact that UVa undergrad out of state
cost of attendance this year is estimated at $41,046 and I know that I did not spend that much this year.
Also, undergrad COL for returning students (so not using dorms/meal plans necessarily) is estimated as:
Room $4,567
Board $3,590
Personal Expenses $2,139
which is substantially lower than the law school estimates.
Just a thought...

Nope. I was accepted regular decision in December, had my FASFA in Feb 1st and the UVA aid form within a week of them sending the email...nothing in SIS.omg wrote:I don't have anything eitherCE2JD wrote:So... So for GradPLUS, do we apply to the lender separately on their website, or through the SIS system? Also, what's the timeline for this sort of thing?

I still have nothing, and I sent in my FAFSA in early February. This all seems really confusing though. I am going to have to read the last three pages several times.

When massive inflation hits in 4 years, we'll be paying back very little in terms of real $!!!bulldog4574 wrote:we'll pay off these loans guys and gals, no need to worry.

The real f'd up thing is that tution will probably keep increasing while big law salaries will begin to decrease.CE2JD wrote:Srsly, one can only hope.JSUVA2012 wrote:When massive inflation hits in 4 years, we'll be paying back very little in terms of real $!!!bulldog4574 wrote:we'll pay off these loans guys and gals, no need to worry.

I think if firms were going to decrease their salaries, they would have done so already.RTF wrote:The real f'd up thing is that tution will probably keep increasing while big law salaries will begin to decrease.

I dunno, law firms are very very slow to change and that seems to be the talk in NYC.JSUVA2012 wrote:I think if firms were going to decrease their salaries, they would have done so already.RTF wrote:The real f'd up thing is that tution will probably keep increasing while big law salaries will begin to decrease.

Re: UVA Class of 2012
Hiring fewer people at the same salary and billable requirement as before would seem to be a wiser adjustment to having a smaller workload. Preserves the prestige and reputation of the firm, as well. The very top firms will continue to pay 160k and so it will still be seen as the standard.
But TBH, I don't want this thread to get depressing, so we should take this elsewhere (PM, separate thread, etc.).

Well, it's kind of too late to not make this thread depressing. We've all been talking about our debt load on and off for the last 20 pages.

Re: UVA Class of 2012
Sure you can argue the prestige thing all you want, but if a Cravath or Skadden lower their starting salaries the rest will follow. It's a heard mentality among firms with the exception of Wachtell, which is in another league altogether. Hard to argue prestige in terms of salary when all the firms are cutting back right now.JSUVA2012 wrote:Hiring fewer people at the same salary and billable requirement as before would seem to be a wiser adjustment to having a smaller workload. Just my thoughts on it. I get a lot of info because my gf works for career services in a pretty solid law school.
