Are you hard-core as in "good at basketball", or hard-core in that you play like an arrogant dick? I've played against a lot of guys that are the latter, and I must admit, after the 40th foul it gets a bit tiresome.bulldog4574 wrote:Count me in for basketball as well. i've gotta warn you though i'm pretty hard-core about it.philosophy wrote:i'm headed to UVA, so you can add me to the list.
also, even though i'm horribly out of shape, count me in for basketball.

I think he answered that "hardcore" pretty much means shoots 3s like Steve Kerr so presumably not engaged in much fouling.

Re: UVA Class of 2012
^^ usually the one who's getting up there in age. high probability of wearing a head band and high probability of being extremely sweaty. Will scream angrily at teammates for not doing their "jobs," and usually capable of doing a great impression of dikembe mutombo with the elbow swinging.
Yes I know the ones your talking about. I also do play a bit of basketball but don't take it very seriously at all. I usually just like to run around for the cardio. And even though i'm 200 lb+ and 6 feet tall, I too will stand at the three point line all day long. (I hate making body contact with other sweaty people). I will tell you before the game starts that you can count on me to make about 10 percent of my shots and I am NOT shy about hurling the rock so pass to me with discretion.

I think somewhere around pages in the mid-teens and early 30s there is a bunch of postings about housing if you need some guidance.

thesealocust wrote:Arlington is actually just a street with a bunch of different kinds of housing. A quick rundown from closest to the law school to closest to the barracks road shopping center, though all are VERY close to the law school:kguilf99 wrote:I'm starting to think about housing and saw a few posts about Arlington. What is Arlington? Why is it better or worse than Ivy? Can someone post a link? Thanks!
1) Copely - university housing. Very expensive 2 bedroom apartment, and it houses 4 people (and 1.5 baths). Only upside is that you're not stuck with a lease over the summer. Very few law students, from what I hear. http://www.virginia.edu/housing/options ... &type=grad
2) The Jeffersonian appartments. Fills up EXTREMELY quickly (as in, mid-feb), closest non-university-run housing to the law school. One of the cheapest complexes I've seen in C-ville, kind of dated units that are light on amenities but still very popular (for obvious reasons - location and $). 2 bedroom/1 bath and 1 bedroom. http://www.jeffersonianapartments.com/
3) Arlington boulevard condos - I _think_ this are privately owned then rented out (or just lived in) by individual owners. Across the street from the Jeffersonian.
4) Arlington boulevard townhouses. More expensive than jeffersonian or grad center. 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, on two levels with a small fenced in backyard and ample parking. --LinkRemoved--
5) The graduate center, run by woodard properties who own about 55 other properties in Charlottesville. More expensive than the Jeffersonian, with an odd set up - each unit is 4 private rooms w/ private entrances, private bath, individual lease, and then one shared common area. --LinkRemoved--
To my knowledge, all of the units are as expensive or cheaper than ivy after utilities, but I only did detailed price research for a few of the areas.
Keep in mind that standing at any one of these places you can pretty much see the rest within a block, so the differences in location are minor. But their location is epic - <5 minute walk to the law school and also <5 minutes to a shopping center with a liquor store, 2 24 hour groceries, a chipotle, mcdonalds, burger king, ruby tuesdays, ben & jerry's, 5 guys, panera, barnes and noble, bed bath and beyond, and about a zillion other useful things to be walking distance from.
EDIT: Here's what shadowfish (who actually lives there now) had to say:
shadowfish wrote:Jeffersonian is nearly impossible to get into. If you want a 1bd, you have to apply Jan 1, no kidding. I got a 2 bd+den by applying mid-Jan, and I think there's something like 35 people on the waitlist either for 1 bds or 2bds.
If you're looking at Arlington Blvd., though, you have a few options:
-Arlington Condos, which I've never been in. They're pretty cheap though (2bd+1.5ba+basement with washer/dryer) for 1050. They also offer a basement 1bd thing for about 775, which I never saw advertised, but a friend of mine lives in one, and I know someone else who lived in one last year. Neither of them particularly like the basement, but you could be different?
-Arlington Townhomes (different from condos). These are now 1175, 2bd+1ba, hardwood floors. No dishwasher, but they do have a washer/dryer. My friend who lives there complains that it's dark, which I agree with. And though I haven't seen the Arlington Condos, it seems to me they'd just kind of be superior.
-2200 Arlington, or something like that. It's an apartment complex with no name, reasonably good prices (1bd + den on 3rd floor was 670/mo), but no washer/dryer even on site. Some people living their send their laundry out, use their friends' apartment complexes' laundry, or go to the good old Millmont laundromat (which I've never set foot in but heard is gross).
-I live at Grad Center, and I'll pimp the 3rd floor apartments. They're essentially studios, though you share a kitchen with 3 other people (if you're like me and only can make microwave food, that hardly matters). The cool thing is that you have a ladder up to a loft, which has enough room for a bed and some other stuff. There's also a skylight, which helps the lighting. I pay 525 a month for that. There are apartments on the 2nd and 1st floor, but they don't have the loft or skylight and generally suck. If you want pictures, PM me and I can send them to you.
-There are also some townhomes even closer to 29 than Grad Center, but I dunno the address.
Thanks so much for all of the housing info!!

You sound like a fun guy to play with, and i've totally played against the guy you described. And props to gladiator for the Steve Kerr reference, somewhat dated and certainly obscure but props nonetheless.Sxhawnn wrote:^^ usually the one who's getting up there in age. high probability of wearing a head band and high probability of being extremely sweaty. I definitely like poker. I've probably made more money than I've lost, but I still don't consider myself to be very good. As long as the buy-ins are fairly low I'd be interested in playing.ndm2007 wrote:anyone like poker in addition to/instead of athletic endeavors? I'm pretty good......

+1, I am not very good either though so you probably would want to play with me - so that you could make money.showNprove wrote:I play Texas Hold 'Em. I'm pretty good, but I haven't played in too many intense games, so I'm not sure exactly how good.

So apparently UVA just released a bunch of people from the waitlist. Their e-mail stated that they've been getting a lot of seat deposits. I wonder if they will overenroll again.

this makes me extremely curious about the final numbers for this year in terms of admissions - great year for UVA.showNprove wrote:I also read that they've only admitted a fraction of the applicants they normally do. Well, with more students paying fees, perhaps that will mean more Thursday kegs.
