Re: Columbia Law School 2012!
I requested an apartment share (no price specifications) CLOSE to the law school and said I could move in any time during the first three weeks of august. I was only specific about proximity, and got put in the Bronx.

Re: Columbia Law School 2012!
I'm wondering if I should send an e-mail to housing with changes to my application so I can specifically request housing close to Columbia. I guess I just assumed that all law-student-only housing (which I asked for) was close to the school, but who knows now if that's the case. What do you guys think?booyakasha45 wrote:damn, that's incredibly obnoxious of Columbia.acegikm wrote:I requested an apartment share (no price specifications) CLOSE to the law school and said I could move in any time during the first three weeks of august. I would most definitely contact them and say you want to be close. I also requested law student specific housing.

Re: Columbia Law School 2012!
Just to give people some hope... I requested an apartment share near the law school with rent under $1100 and preferably other 1Ls for roommates, and a move in date in the second week of August. I got my assignment on Friday, and I have the biggest bedroom in a good sized apartment on 118th for about $1000 a month with the move in dates I requested. They didn't honor my roommate request (based on my facebook stalking, I'm with a 3L and a grad student), but I can live with that. So they are at least granting some requests.
That's horrible that some of you got places so far away, though. Especially when we were basically led to believe that all of the apartments would be in Morningside Heights.

You're in a *share* in the Bronx? That rent had better be cheap. Seriously, this is really annoying. I wouldn't want to live in the Bronx if that's where I got put, and yet I don't have the budget to be living in a studio near Columbia (and I don't have the vacation days I'd need to go up and apt hunt). I'm sorry...are you taking the Bronx, or are you going to go off-campus?acegikm wrote:I requested an apartment share (no price specifications) CLOSE to the law school and said I could move in any time during the first three weeks of august. Re: Columbia Law School 2012!
It's $940/month. No cheaper than many of the places I was shown that were very close to the law school. The building looks nice, but apparently is nowhere near a subway stop?? I havent heard back from anyone in housing, but I talked to someone in admissions who had never even heard of law students being placed in that location, so I'm praying he can help me out with the housing people. They completely lied to all of us, its not like I'm just being picky in rejecting an offer.jpaul09 wrote:You're in a *share* in the Bronx? That rent had better be cheap. Re: Columbia Law School 2012!
i was walking by Columbia three weeks ago and i got off metro at 110th street and found myself in middle of quite scary neighborhood. as soon as i got out i saw streets name after malcom x and fredercik dougless and a protest about "jail aint no good." i saw in how much trouble i was, but i kept walking and walking. on the corner before getting to morningside park, a crazy man came over and saw me and my brother near morningside avenue and he scream, "oh yea, send more white boys." it was a ridiculous experience. when we finally climb the giant palisade cliff thing, the university was very different and beautfiul, but my god is harlem the most frighten thing i have seen. i am from spain so i dont know much about american street name, but it seem everytime i see a street name Martin King Jr or Frederick Dougless or Malcom X i can know what is waiting for me. there is also a scary street name St. Nicholas Ave. even santa clause is scary in harlem, my goodness! very scary.

So you requested proximity and I requested a studio and instead they put us together in a place 6 miles away. I guess this is the legendary Columbia bureaucracy I was warned about in action.

Re: Columbia Law School 2012!
And you and Noodles are roommates? So they didn't even honor his studio? This makes no sense. I think I remember there being a shuttle from the apt building to the main campus, but UAH's website has been down for me all afternoon, so I can't even look. Seriously, I'd start raising hell...maybe I'm wrong, but do other grad students (ie English Ph.D. candidates or something like that) have to get to classes all the time, or do they mainly work on their research/dissertations and TA courses? Because I would think that your schedule would be busier and you might have more reason to be in the library than the avg grad student. Again, maybe I'm wrong, but it just seems really weird to put the law kids randomly out in the Bronx.acegikm wrote:It's $940/month. Did everybody who received a housing offer also get a floorplan? I saw some posts where people said they got a floorplan with the email housing offer, but I didn't get one...just checking to see if I have to call UAH or something.

Re: Columbia Law School 2012!
I think acegikm and I were put together as roommates. I don't know about any shuttle service but I am not living in the Bronx. I thought it was completely possible to get a studio for 1200 within 20 minutes of 116 and Amsterdam. The MTA trip planner says the shortest trip is 45 minutes.
Also, I did get a floor plan. The room looks great except for the location.

Hahaha. You kind of rock.
Hey, does anyone know if our undergrad university can provide MMR immunization proof, or just the doctor who administered these vaccinations when we were wee babies?

Yeah, they can. I had my undergrad mail me a copy of my immunization record and I just forwarded it onto CLS. They emailed me last week to say I was compliant.Lem37 wrote:booyakasha45 wrote:so I guess they're giving out housing offers in reverse order of disappointment-inducing capacity.
