Re: Duke Law Class of 2012
Hey everyone, so I decided today that I will be attending Duke Law in the fall, then I logged onto TLS to see that Duke moved into the number 10 spot! Made my day even better. Finally deciding takes such a weight off my chest. Look forward to seeing all of you in the fall!

Welcome to our little group. That list is getting pretty big - we're approaching 10% of the incoming class!skiridedrive wrote:Hey everyone, so I decided today that I will be attending Duke Law in the fall, then I logged onto TLS to see that Duke moved into the number 10 spot! Hey everyone, I just received an email from Duke saying that I could check my tuition bill on something called ACES. It took me a while to figure out what exactly this is so I figured that I would post a link to it here.

does anyone know if the deposit for the summer start is binding? I'm on the waitlist, and just got an email asking if I still want to be on it.. but I'm waitlisted at Harvard and not ready to withdraw from that

The summer start deposit requires you to withdraw from all schools where you have been accepted. So you should be fine to ride out the Harvard waitlist if you so choose.SaraBara wrote:does anyone know if the deposit for the summer start is binding? Thanks for this. Is it just me or is the ACES system not very intuitive?aer wrote:Hey everyone, I just received an email from Duke saying that I could check my tuition bill on something called ACES. Hey Bosque, I turned down Stanford to go to Duke, so maybe that frees up a spot for you

Your welcome, it definitely seems cumbersome. Part of me hopes that it will be explained during orientation while the rest hates myself for wanting to sit through a computer tutorial.dmnshm wrote:Thanks for this. Count me in for Duke Law 2012! Took a while for me to finally pull the trigger, but in the end, after doing all the admit weekends, I just felt most comfortable at Duke and am really excited to get started this August! See you all in Durham!

Did you specifically say you wanted to give your spot to me? Because otherwise I am probably going to have to be waitlisted first. Stanford seems to be out of admitted phone calls.irishlaw wrote:Hey Bosque, I turned down Stanford to go to Duke, so maybe that frees up a spot for you
Oh well. Worst case senario: I get to go to frickin Duke! So what am I complaining about?

dresq,
Count me in for the class of 2012! (unless, of course, Stanford decides to either come to or lose their senses)

Hello Duke Law Class of 2012...
Can you guys help me out with something? I'm having a really hard time deciding between Duke and Michigan. I narrowed it down to both of these schools because the student body seemed to be the most friendly and laid-back.
-I went to both ASW and had a great time.
-I'm a New Yorker and looking to go back to NYC after Law School.
-Duke is giving me $48,000 and Michigan is giving me $45,000.
What made you choose Duke over other schools, specifically Michigan? Any insight you guys can give me would be great. Is there something I can do at Michigan that I can't do at Duke?

I chose not to apply to Michigan because of the weather. I would not necessarily advise that anyone else makes their decision for this reason, but it made sense for me. Good luck with your decision and you can't really go wrong either way.topsome wrote:Hello Duke Law Class of 2012...

Count me in on Duke also.
I just sent my tuition deposit.
It came down to Berkeley, Virginia, and Duke but Duke won it out in the end. See you guys in fall.

I picked Duke because I am interested in IP (patent law) and I want to clerk. Duke is better for both of those things. I also feel that they are making strides in my other area of interest, Constitutional law. Combine all of that with the fantastic clinics at Duke, the better weather, and the smaller class size, and it was an easy decision for me.
Plus I absolutely LOVED the ASD. That helped too.
(This part of the note is actually in comparison to Cornell: I felt like the faculty cared more about the students and what happens to them at Duke. During the ASW at Cornell, I talked to maybe one or two professors briefly. At Duke 6 or 7 made a point of trying to get to know me. I had a drink with the guy who taught our Contracts class. I really hope I have him when I take that class, he was fantastic. All in all, the faculty seem like they are really invested in getting you what you want out of your law career.
Maybe that is part of the reason the job placement is so high.)

Re: Duke Law Class of 2012
Totally subjective. Your options will be essentially the same upon exit. My choice came down to location and money, only one of which seems to apply in your case. I gave a much more extensive reply regarding my decision earlier in the thread (page 6, I think). Feel free to take a look at that. Good luck - you won't make a bad decision either way!topsome wrote:Hello Duke Law Class of 2012...

Re: Duke Law Class of 2012
I was making the decision between Duke and Michigan too. I talked to a lot of partners at big firms (Kirkland, Jones Day, etc.) and they all basically told me the same thing: it doesn't really matter which choice you make, you'll be fine coming out of either school in terms of getting a job. For me, it came down to location and the fact that I had a terrible experience when I went to visit Michigan. Weather played a role, but the major factor was the small class size. At Michigan, all of the students seemed like one of thousands of people on campus -- at Duke, it felt much warmer. I guess it really just came down to a feeling, if that makes any sense.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
