Re: Illinois 2012
The "Vegas trip before law school" seems to be a theme amongst people I know. I'll be heading out there in 2 weeks, but didn't plan it very well because I'll have 1 more week of work before moving down to Champaign. Recovering from Vegas + anxiously waiting to move + packing=pretty terrible week at work.
Unrelated; does anyone have a nice tailgating grill? If you do, how much was it and is it worth buying? Or do you just want to be friendly and share?

I thought about making the trip to Vegas, but decided I didn't want to waste the money. My little brother and my friend are in Miami right now, and heading to Vegas Sunday. I probably made a smart decision, but definitely wish I was out there right now.sydney wrote:The "Vegas trip before law school" seems to be a theme amongst people I know. Did anyone have any luck getting their move-in date moved to an earlier date?

I think the class schedules are going to be sent out ~2 weeks before classes start. No reliable facts here, just kind of the feel I get from the tone of their emails. I would hope they don't wait until the week before, but I guess you never know. Is anyone going to try to buy their books from Amazon or a 2L or just get the bundle from the bookstore?

1L schedules are distributed during orientation. 2Ls will be ready and willing to cut you a good deal on books, assuming we have the correct editions for you. During orientation, you'll be paired up with 2L advisers who will gladly catch you up to speed on these sorts of issues. Also, the Student Bar Association will sell used books in the range of $20 for casebooks, $10 for supplements. These are incredible prices, but unfortunately, most editions are dated.
I'd estimate that last year about 80% or more of my class purchased the book bundles, new and pricey, from the COL bookstore. Most of us were neurotic about getting books with highlights or underlines. I would advise that you look for better deals because you can cut your costs in half or better with just a little bit of searching. Also, eventually, you'll get access to the law school forum, which the IT dept is trying to establish as the go to arena for such business as buying/selling stuff, general law school discussion.

I'd suggest holding off on the grill only because there is a 3L who is an avid tailgater and hosts a law school tailgate at each home game. He really goes all out, and the result is pretty classic. You'll begin hearing about this as football approaches.sydney wrote:The "Vegas trip before law school" seems to be a theme amongst people I know. Is it too late to purchase football tickets? I'll probably head out with the group that watches Longhorn games, but still want to have season tickets if I decide to check out a few games.L47_dTx wrote:I'd suggest holding off on the grill only because there is a 3L who is an avid tailgater and hosts a law school tailgate at each home game. They most likely still have season tickets available. If you don't plan on going to every game though, I would purchase individual tickets for the games that you plan on attending (that worked for me in undergrad and hopefully in law school as well).L47_dTx wrote:Is it too late to purchase football tickets? Thanks for your help. Like I said I was hoping not to have to wait much longer for section assignments, but this gives me even more reason to look forward to orientation. From the sounds of it we'll have most of our questions taken care of during those few days.L47_dTx wrote:1L schedules are distributed during orientation

Hai! There is a Chicago TLS meetup happening in August.
http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 10&t=80765
The easiest way to get from Chambana to Chicago seems to be Amtrack. They have morning and evening trains between Chambana and Chicago, and the fare seems to be less than $40 round-trip. The travel time is 2-3 hours.
If UIUC folks are interested in attending and don't have a place to stay in Chicago, PM me and I'll see if we can work anything out.

I may be wrong. I remember a facebook group and several discussions pertaining to our section designations -- all this took place before orientation.sydney wrote:Thanks for your help. last year sections were given out the week before orientation - not at orientation. you can find out on Enterprise before you get your email (I think I was able to access it the day before) by clicking on the weekly schedule link (not the class registration link).L47_dTx wrote:I may be wrong. Sections and schedules are up:
(Just copying this from the student board)
I just logged into the self service app and our sections were posted. You can log in here: https://apps.uillinois.edu/StudentFacSelfService.html
Then click "Registration and Records" then "Registration" then "Student Schedule - Detail."
I'm section C, and subsection 6(I think)
Edit: My schedule is quite bizarre:
Monday:
Crim Law 1:30-2:45
Legal Research 3:30-4:45
Tuesday:
Crim Law 1:30-2:45
Legal Writing 4:30-5:20
Wednesday:
Contracts 9-10:15
Crim Law 1:30-2:45
Torts 3-4:15
Thursday:
Contracts 9-10:15
Torts 10:30-11:45
Friday:
Contracts 9-10:15
Torts 10:30-11:45
Legal Writing 2-2:50
At first glance, it's strangely back loaded, and I would probably pay $1000 to switch that friday LW to thursday

Re: Illinois 2012
Howdy ya'll,
On Monday August 17th there will be a Bar Crawl for the incoming 1LS. I think we have a fair number of people interested, but be sure to tell any incoming students you know about the event.
People are more entertaining when they drink. Here's a chance to make a first impression other than the kid who couldn't wait to tell the holding in Monge v Beebe Rubber Company.
Time: 9:00 P.M. - Midnight
Bars:
Boltini's Lounge: 9:00 - 9:45 PM - 211 N Neil St # 1
Cowboy Monkey: 9:45 - 10:30 PM 6 E Taylor St
Radio Maria: 10:30 - 11:15 PM 119 N Walnut St
The Blind Pig: 11:15 - Midnight 120 N Walnut St
I tried to negotiate special drink prices at the bars, but alas, I'm afraid we're stuck with their specials due to Happy Hour Law.
I'm sure this doesn't need to be said, but as a disclaimer:
Please arrange for your own transportation if you're going to get drunk. You don't want to ruin your life two days prior to Orientation. I assume no responsibility for any illicit activities that should arise from Bar Crawl.
Taxi Services:
Yellow Checker Cab: (217) 355-3553
Campus Taxi: (217) 351-6951
Taxi Co: (217) 355-1212
Illini Taxi: (217) 384-5892
