I don't think this has ever happened, but I imagine that schools would simply start offering money to people who agreed to defer if overenrollment became a problem. If 400 people enrolled at UVA, for instance, I'm sure UVA would send out an e-mail saying "$10,000/year scholarship if you defer" and then keep raising the amount until they got 30-40 to defer (they could accommodate a small increase). It would be expensive, but necessary. They can't simply tell people "sorry, we don't actually have room for you, too bad."ndm2007 wrote:Do schools ever tell some accepted people they can't come if the class is really over-enrolled..?
That would really suck.
In other news, "Hoos" excited for the Deadliest Catch season premier!? I love that show. Watching a re-run right now.

Just playing devil's advocate here: what, legally speaking, is holding them back from just telling people that were previously "admitted" that they can't come? I realize it would be a PR disaster, but there's nothing legally binding them to allow us to enroll, right?Fup wrote:I don't think this has ever happened, but I imagine that schools would simply start offering money to people who agreed to defer if overenrollment became a problem. Re: UVA Class of 2012
That's a good question. Obviously we know that law firms can rescind offers to incoming associates, but I'm sure that the relationship between an employer and employee is legally different than the relationship between a school and an admitted student. Does the acceptance letter amount to a contract, and does rescinding an offer of admission amount to a breach of contract? Schools obviously have policies stating that offers of admission may be rescinded if the applicant is caught lying on his application, gets a major case of senioritis, etc., but if the school does not have a policy stating "offers of admission may be rescinded if our class fills up," then I don't know if they can legally rescind offers in this case or not.Just playing devil's advocate here: what, legally speaking, is holding them back from just telling people that were previously "admitted" that they can't come? Obviously, even if schools could legally rescind offers due to overenrollment, it would never happen. I think the very worst case scenario is that schools simply tell people "you must defer for a year," but I think to avoid a PR disaster, schools would make every attempt to pay students to defer rather than force them to.

They'd probably offer $$$ to people to try and get them to defer before they did anything else. Airline style.

How many people still don't have financial aid stuff? I don't, but I'm hoping it will be up soon.

Re: UVA Class of 2012
I spoke to Financial Aid yesterday. They told me they were still waiting to hear the exact figures about tution for our incoming class. Once that was complete, we would receive emails that this information was up on the SIS page. But, she told me we would probably receive an email around mid to late April.
Hope that helps.

Re: UVA Class of 2012
i dont think that UVA would offer scholarhips to students to defer. If UVA offered 30,000 scholarship per year to defer would you take it, what about 15,000?
i havent even checked my financial aid stuff yet, although i havent even paid my deposits yet, but i guess i should since all this talk of over enrollement, its making me nervous. i should pay at least one of them

If they offered me 30000 I'd be quite torn, but I think I'd ultimate say no. They could always try giving me more money, I've heard being less in debt suck less than being in more debt.ak9786 wrote:i dont think that UVA would offer scholarhips to students to defer. Looking like $45,000. When I created my annual budget I only anticipated it being $42,000.legends159 wrote: And btw does anyone know what the tuition for non-res is going to be this fall? Their website has 2008-2009 which was last fall's.
