"In law" means it is connected to a house but has its own entrance, bathroom, etc. I think these apartments or studios were originally used or meant for "in-laws," hence the name.

A friend of mine just returned from a trip to Berkeley, where he discovered this ice cream parlor:

Check out the flavor listing - it's insane. AND for those nights when we're studying for finals, need some comfort, but don't want to tear ourselves away from the law books for too long.....they deliver.

Signed my lease today. Got a fantastic deal at Berkeley Way and Milvia. Me happy. Now ready for 1L. Also, met Dean Tom today. His office is grand (in Telegraph, couple of blocks North of Ashby). "This is the only law school that can claim to have an office that overlooks the Golden Gate bridge," he boasted
Also in the news: Biking up to Boalt Hall from Shattuck (or anywhere going from the West to the East of campus) is really quite a workout! The upslope kills ya. I think I am too lazy for that kinda workout when hurrying over to class

Interesting. I hardly eat any ice cream but yesterday I tried $1 scoop somewhere at Shattuck (and nearby school). The selection wasn't as huge but it tasted quite good. I think it's within a block or two South from the BART station.IzziesGal wrote:A friend of mine just returned from a trip to Berkeley, where he discovered this ice cream parlor:

I just aced my loan entrance quiz. Considering I normally screw up finances, I'm calling this a victory.

One month until our first day of class! Hope everyone is having a good summer
I went skydiving for the first time last week and got the video taken. I may have passed out right before landing... embarrassing or hilarious? I'm going with the latter.
Check it out.

Re: Berkeley Class of 2012
I was wondering if any of you use a particular organizing program on your computer. I was a ardent user of Planplus, which is based on Stephen Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People when I was at work. But it is not compatible with mac. So I'm looking at Things by Cultured Code (http://culturedcode.com/things/) and Omnifocus (http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omnifocus/). Both are based on the Getting Things Done model. Have any of you used either of these programs or thinking of getting one of them? They also sync with your iphone/ipod touch/or similar mobile phones.

Check it out.
But it brings up two points of observation:
1. When I met you in April, you seemed to have enough sense not to jump out of a perfectly good airplane, and
2. The loss of consciousness underscores the feeble in feeblemiles!

Congrats and thanks for the entertainment!

Hey everyone. I'm not attending Boalt this fall, but really hope to next year. Would anyone be willing to look over my "Why Berkeley" essay? This is definitely my top choice (amongst schools at which I have a shot, at least) and could probably benefit from some feedback on people who were accepted. Just post here or shoot me a PM if you're willing. Thanks!

Re: Berkeley Class of 2012
Hey all,
Don't post very often, but after months of imagining what Berkeley might look like, I finally made it out here to find a place and check out the area. I scored an awesome 1BR in a cool Art-Deco style building on Haste and Shattuck. For anyone still looking, I highly recommend checking out Berkeley Apartments. They're a little pricey, but the people are really helpful, friendly, and informative. I think they own buildings scattered around campus.
Anyway, real reason for this post is to share some pics from around and inside Boalt. Might help those of us who couldn't make it to ASW get a small feel for the building!

On a side note, I got to experience the more "extreme" side of Berkeley while visiting. I was wearing an Air Force training shirt (not the best idea, but I didn't even think about it!), walking outside the McDonalds on Shattuck, when some crazy guy started yelling obscenities and bashing the military, giving me the bird all the while. I have to admit, I got a bit heated
. Not even an hour in Berkeley, and this happens! Guess I need to be a bit more cognizant of my attire for the next couple of years...lol

Pacific Gas & Electric is the primary utility company. PG&E was also party to a landmark contracts case decided by Roger Traynor, one of Boalt's most renowned and frequently-cited graduates. *wanders off*

Re: Berkeley Class of 2012
Oh man I finally got through one of the optional reading books, "Simple Justice" which is about the history of Brown v. Board. It was a monstrous 800 pages! But it was amazing, inspiring, and worth every page. I had no idea that the chief justice who heard the case (and was leaning against desegregation) died a few months before a decision had to be rendered! That left the door open for Eisenhower to nominate Earl Warren, governor of California at the time and a Boalt Hall alum! He successfully united all of the 8 other justices to support overturning Plessy and desegregating the schools. Sadly, the book ends on a somewhat somber note when it discusses how the later Supreme Court under Rehnquist and Scalia worked to undermine and dismantle Brown. In fact the school district in the Brown case is just as, if not more, segregated today than it was 50 years ago. Has anyone read any of the other books on the list? I'm thinking of picking up another.

Hey, did anyone else have to turn in a proof of citizenship of some sort to the financial aid?
They said that you must do it in person, and I will not be able to do it right before school starts, which means I cannot use my loans at all to pay for tuition until then.

I also get an error message when trying to access my e-bill. In our orientation email from a few weeks back, I think that it said that our e-bill would be accessible on or around August 1. I may be completely off though.amyLAchemist wrote:Another question - has anyone been able to access their e-bill on cars? I keep getting errors...

Yes, I think this is about right (ebill accessible after the dummy class registration or something like that).purplemonkey wrote:I also get an error message when trying to access my e-bill. Interesting. I did read excerpts from Brown when I was doing a paper on legal philosophy but nothing in detail.unionorganizer02 wrote:Oh man I finally got through one of the optional reading books, "Simple Justice" which is about the history of Brown v. And, feeblemiles' video is just great. Skydiving is now on my list of adventurous things to do, right after bungee jumping. I have yet to muster up courage for that one, to begin with.

Hey everyone! I just got here on Monday and so far, I love it!! The Bay Area is just breathtaking. I am soooo happy to be out of Manhattan. Can't wait to meet you all and to start exploring Berkeley. =)
Quick question....we can't do the dummy registration thing until August, correct?

On the plus side-- work is over. A few formalities tomorrow and I'll be able to start to get REALLY excited for school.
