I'm a die-hard New Yorker and I've enjoyed Ann Arbor . . . but not the weather.

Nope. You'll probably need to switch your insurance (although be forewarned: it's expensive! My insurance went UP moving from NY!! Damn Michigan drivers and their no-fault policies). But you can leave your car registered wherever it is now.maddy wrote:are students required to register their cars in michigan? sorry if that's a stupid question, i just have no idea how that works.

Make sure you try different companies, though. Our Geico that we had in VA was WAY more expensive in MI, but then we found that State Farm was about the same as we had been paying.

Thanks guys!!!!
Rather unfortunate birthday placement for a law student, but at least it's on a Fri/Sat/Sun all three years, with no exams on the actual day.

And I know the feeling. Mine is next Tuesday. On the same day as my Civ Pro final. This is going to happen to me EVERY year probably. Ugh.

Re: Michigan 2012
Got my email address today! Now it really feels official. Went with first initial + last name, pretty basic.
Now working on getting my boyfriend to move out. He's a ruby on rails programmer and is worried he won't be able to get work he likes in the area. Anybody on here know about the state of the Ann Arbor tech industry? Any handy contacts I can check out? (Don't say Google--I work at Google in California, and I know there's nothing for him at Google AA, unfortunately.)

Can't he a get a WFH job? I used to know a bunch of RoR programmers that mostly worked from home. Sorry, couldn't help more.mightydinosaur wrote:Got my email address today! Now it really feels official. Went with first initial + last name, pretty basic.

Yes, he could, but because it is still pretty early in his career, he's really interested in networking and having a community to learn from. I'm just not sure there's enough of that in AA, but I'm glad he's at least open to looking.

What do you mean by take it apart? Let's see. There is no taking apart the desk. The nightstand/table. Nah. You can't take apart the bookshelf they give you. You might be able to take apart the bed frame, but you still would have to store the mattress in your room somewhere.summertimechi wrote:how easy to take apart is the god-awful dark, gloomy, anient-looking furniture in the LC? easy? doable? impossible? do tell.
ETA: Maybe the LC isn't for you. It's REALLY not that hard to find a studio or 1-bedroom surrounding the area. That might be your best bet.

Man... thinking about my hometown today, I already miss the sunny weather. It's like the only reason I haven't withdrawn from USC/Duke yet...
Plus, where in Michigan can you get a pink moment most evenings?

Where is that? Reminds me of Santa Barbara.

unfortunately that's what i think, too. but i just really don't want to live somewhere where it takes more than ...hmm...7-10 mins of walking in the cold and snow to get to class. nor do I want to have to wait in aforementioned cold and snow for 20 mins to catch a bus. but it seems like finding a place on my own means having to put up with one or both of those things. but then the LC, while conveniently located, means an ugly, cramped living space and sharing bathrooms with other people. ugh, sometimes i really wonder if i made the right choice.

Ojai, CA. We're about 45 minutes from Santa Barbara, 15 minutes from the ocean.
