So is everyone going to join the law school softball league? A 3L at the open house said it was his favorite part of law school.

I was on the geology softball team and we rocked it all the way to the top of the finals. But innertube water polo is actually the best team sport at Davis.

Hi future/prospective Davisers. I read in Ken's Davis profile article that many 1L classes at Davis are a year long instead of a semester like at other law schools. Is this true, and is this at all impacting your decision to attend Davis? The logic goes that a year long course gives you more time to learn the material but also makes for a more comprehensive final exam.

The only course that's year-long is legal Research and Writing. it used to be broken up into one semester of legal research and one semester of legal writing. Combining them into one year-long course makes sense, imo. As attorneys, were going to be researching and writing simultaneously, so that's how it should be taught.DCDeckard wrote:Hi future/prospective Davisers. You're very brave to leave a very sweet job to go to law school at Davis and commute one hour each way a day there when you have two children. It seems to me you'll have a hard time finding a sufficient amount of time to study, but selling a home around here is pretty hard right now and moving is a pain in the ass, so I can understand your motivation to stay.jenbren wrote:You really shouldn't be so presumptuous. Commuting from Walnut Creek during 1L seems like a bad idea if for no other reason than you have to live in Walnut Creek for another year. Seriously, there's nothing to do there. Also, not to be presumptuous, but unless you have a pretty sweet job right now you're probably living with your parents. That's certainly not something I'd want to be doing in law school.

I am originally from Sacramento, went to school in Berkeley, currently working in New Mexico, returning early June to Sac/Davis.

Davis is ahead of Hastings in the 2010 rankings!! This, along with all of Davis' other great strengths, pretty much sealed the Hastings/Davis debate for me in favor of Davis.

IF those "leaked" rankings are real, Davis rising to 35 ahead of UCH should pretty much ice the Davis/Hastings debate.DCDeckard wrote:Davis is ahead of Hastings in the 2010 rankings!! Congrats on the rankings boost. If Davis pulls through higher than Hastings again, it should seal the deal, Davis > Hastings.

It appears that Ken has given the new rankings his blessing. In any case, the fact that Davis, a law school barely 40 years old, continually tops Hastings, a law school with over a 130 years of history, attests to Davis' quality and standing.

HAH! Davis > Hastings. And McGeorge (with whose grads UCD grads compete for Sacto jobs) is now an official TTT. Great news for UCD in these rankings.
This makes picking UCD over GW seem like a MUCH better decision.

I just thought I would post the photo for posterity's sake on this thread, commemorating Davis' small victory in the rankings over Hastings. (I'm feeling pretty good about this-- Hastings WL'd me...)

The Hastings/Davis debate has always been pointless...They are both good schools that have usually been similarly ranked...5 spot differences in the 30s is completely meaningless. They jump around stocastically year to year so the fact that Hastings was ranked higher last year is meaningless and the fact that Davis is ranked higher this year is meaningless. If you want to work in Sacramento go to Davis. If you want to work in SF and the bay area go to Hastings. If you want to work anywhere else in CA either one will provide pretty similar options. Alternatively, if you prefer city life go to Hastings...if you dislike big cities and want an actual campus go to Davis.

Re: UC Davis 2012
I will agree that it's a bit of a silly debate, as Davis and Hastings are about as close as peer schools can get (separated usually by <5 ranking spots, in the same state and region, etc.). NLJ250 placement and clerkship placement at each school is virtually identical. Academically and professionally, there is no clear-cut advantage of one school over the other.danconstan wrote:SoftBoiledLife wrote:IF those "leaked" rankings are real, Davis rising to 35 ahead of UCH should pretty much ice the Davis/Hastings debate.DCDeckard wrote:Davis is ahead of Hastings in the 2010 rankings!! That said, I still think it's a meaningful debate and not as simple as Sacramento vs. SF. It's quite easy for Davis grads to find work in the Bay Area and likewise not at all hard for Hastings grads to get work in Sac. To me, the debate really comes down to whether you prefer the campus/college town feel of Davis or the urban lifestyle of SF. I picked Davis before these rankings come out, obviously, but I'd be lying if I didn't say that being 35 makes me feel a little better about my decision.

Can someone tell me how grants work at Davis? Do I have to apply for them or do they let you know if you are eligible? Thanks.

Re: UC Davis 2012
I think someone answered this for you already on the In at Davis thread, but grants are income-based and you are automatically considered from your needaccess app. I did not qualify because I have a salary. Not that my salary means I can afford law school.DCDeckard wrote:Can someone tell me how grants work at Davis? Do I have to apply for them or do they let you know if you are eligible? Thanks.

The ID Number is listed on your Admitted Students site. I think the easiest is under "Response Form," at the top of the page, in red. Kind of hard to miss. Hope this helps. Remember that your birthday (MMDDYYYY) is also needed as a PIN/password at several points.jibstir13 wrote:I tried to view my financial aid info but i need my id # to check it...

Re: UC Davis 2012
Financial Aid Question. I'm an independent but do I still need my parents info for NeedAccess assuming I'm under 30, not a veteran, etc. etc. even though I've been working and claiming independent status for over two years? I feel like if I'm going to be paying for law school myself, their asking for my parents' info is just a rationale for giving me less aid.
