What do you guys think about buying the class textbooks on amazon? Most of the casebooks are at a 20% discount, which usually amounts to saving about $30/book. Does the school bookstore sell them at full price? wonder if buying them at school offers any advantage.

I'm 3B, which from the looks of your schedule means we have all the same courses, but different professors (although I also have mullenix for civpro). I don't know about you, but civpro, prop, contracts, AND LRLW during the same semester sounds fucking brutal to me. Good luck to us! I hope there are no curves that are set across sections.Alta wrote:Section 3C - Cadena Society

4B Bradford here, too. I had an undergrad con law course with Perry at UT and it was a very fun class where I learned a lot. I'm with you Esc, let's win the house cup!nahmorlah wrote:I'm in 4B with you. 4 Bradford society already.Esc wrote:CLASSES ARE UP!
Section 4B
Criminal Law: Prof. Laurin
Property: Prof. Torres
Constiutional Law Small Section: Prof. Perry
Initial impressions: Torres and Perry both look pretty awesome for my interests. Perry is big time on first amendment, government, and DoJ stuff, while Torres has lots of DoJ and Environmental experience. Laurin I'm not sure about...her faculty profile says nothing except she is a recent Columbia J.D. Google reveals that she clerked for Calabresi on the 2nd circuit and worked for a civil rights firm, which is cool, but aside from that I can't find much about her.
Oh, and I'm Bradford society, for what that is worth. 10 points to Gryffindor and all that...

Just the rebate from the Co-op, which isn't terribly impressive if I remember correctly. Also, the ability to look at the book first and make sure that whoever had it before you didn't do something crazy to it (supposing you buy some of your book used through Amazon). That's pretty much it.Cogito wrote:What do you guys think about buying the class textbooks on amazon? Most of the casebooks are at a 20% discount, which usually amounts to saving about $30/book. Agreed. I'm attempting to look on the bright side by telling myself that second semester will be awesome compared to first - but it's not helping much so far. Trial by fire I suppose.Cogito wrote:I'm 3B, which from the looks of your schedule means we have all the same courses, but different professors (although I also have mullenix for civpro). I don't know anything about these guys either, but I think its a good line-up of classes, Section 3 does sound brutal. I think curves are set within the sections though, but I could be mistaken

well, the 20% discount i'm talking about is for the brand NEW books that you order straight from amazon. pretty sweet deal methinks (free shipping to boot).penni_rose wrote:Just the rebate from the Co-op, which isn't terribly impressive if I remember correctly. OMG, guys! My predictions were't too off.
JazzOne and I were assigned to the same group--just as I predicted. I didn't want sections 3 or 4, so everything worked out.

Re: Texas Class of 2012
I priced the books for Section 4.B. Here are the prices (Co-op prices are in black; Amazon in red):Cogito wrote:well, the 20% discount i'm talking about is for the brand NEW books that you order straight from amazon. pretty sweet deal methinks (free shipping to boot).penni_rose wrote:Just the rebate from the Co-op, which isn't terribly impressive if I remember correctly. Co-op Amazon
28355 - Laurin (Law 423: Criminal Law)
Criminal Law: Cases and Materials (American Casebook), Dix and Sharlot
REQUIRED
$ 132.00 $145.00
Understanding Criminal Law, Dressler
OPTIONAL
$ 37.00 N/A
Course Subtotal (before tax): $169.00 $145.00 (Note: I couldn't find Understanding Criminal Law on Amazon new)
*Course Total (after tax): $182.94 $145.00
28405 - Torres (Law 431: Criminal Law)
Property Examples & Explanations, 3e (Paperback), Burke and Snoe
REQUIRED
$ 43.95 $34.01
Property Cases and Materials (University Casebook), Cribbet et al
REQUIRED
$ 137.00 $121.75
Course Subtotal (before tax): $180.95 $155.76
*Course Total (after tax): $195.88 $155.76
28580 - Perry (Law 534: Constitutional Law)
Constitutional Law (University Casebook Series), Gunther and Sullivan
REQUIRED
$ 146.00 $162.00
Deciding to Decide: Agenda Setting in the United States Supreme Court (Paperback), Perry
REQUIRED
$ 34.50 $36.50
Course Subtotal (before tax): $180.50 198.50
*Course Total (after tax): $195.39 198.50
For Property, going with Amazon is the easy choice. For Constitutional, it might make sense to get the casebook from the Co-op and Deciding to Decide from Amazon. Same with Criminal. Hope this helps, guys.
* This is an approximation. Also, I'm assuming most of you will pick up the books from the Co-op. Amazon has no tax and free shipping if you don't live in Washington.
[Edit: The tax rate in Austin is 8.25%]

If any of yall need Perry's book (deciding to decide), I should have a copy or 2 left from his undergrad course (most recent edition, barely used at all).

BTW, can't stress enough how much more convenient it is to get a student season football ticket instead of just drawing for each game. It's well worththe $70. And if you have the cash you should buy your $95 OU ticket, even if just to sell it (they should go for around 300 or more this year, probably going to be 2 v 3)

OK, JazzOne. You, Longhornnyc, Daico, and I are in section 2. Daico and I are in 2D. If you have Silver for Civ Pro, you are probably in 2D, not 2B. The 2B CivPro section will be taught by Albright.JazzOne wrote:2B, Hargrave Society

I'm not familiar with any of these cats, and I don't have Internet at my place yet. If anyone can fill me in, I'd appreciate it.
Here's what I gleaned from the faculty profiles:
Alan Rau - He writes about contracts and ADR. I'm interested in ADR--particularly arbitration--so I'm curious as to how (if at all) he'll interweave both subject areas in the classroom. He also wears rings on both 4th fingers and is comfortable enough to wear a pink dress shirt. Oh, and he's balding

David Anderson - He describes himself as a torts and mass communications law specialist with a particular interest in privacy and libel. There's not much more to tell.
Charles M. Silver - He writes about civpro, professional responsibility, and health law and policy. He's the co-director of the Center on Lawyers, Civil Justice and the Media. He received the Texas Excellence in Teaching Award in 1997. Which means we'll probably have at least one excellent instructor this fall.
I'm ok with contracts, torts, and civPro. Of the three, torts elicits my deepest reservation.
I'm also fine with the schedule for finals. CivPro on Tuesday (12/8), torts on Friday (12/11), and contracts on Tuesday (12/15). Talk about spacing things out!

Anyone know about those optional fees? I don't know what half of them mean (Analecta? Theater/Dance?), so I'm thinking I won't need them...

UT will have various events throughout the year. Speakers, theater productions, I guess dance shows, etc... These optional fees are your admission to those if you want them in season ticket form. You can pay for them one at a time as they come as wellriver.rocks wrote:Anyone know about those optional fees? I don't know what half of them mean (Analecta?
