I looked into UHaul, trailer (u pull) was like 280 for 5 day rental and the smallest truck was almost 800.

I have an 800 cut off. Another question: for those of you with a long drive and bringing your car are you planning on driving it, trailering it (like on the big open air ones), train, or other?

Anybody know of a cheaper way to move all my shit from San Diego to Charlottesville other than getting a Budget rental truck?

I looked into the PODS moving thing and it would cost $2,900 to move a POD from Phoenix to Charlottesville. I could probably buy all new stuff for less than that.

UVA cost/year: 61,000. 19.2 in expenses, 41.8 in tuition. Let's increase tuition (41,800) by 9% per year (see: --LinkRemoved--)

09-10: 61,000
10-11: 63,090
11-12: 65,285
12-13: 67,589
....
Also, can anybody confirm (at least ballpark) that my math was right on all of that?

I haven't worked through the whole thing, but the first thing that I see as wrong -- and I very well could be missing something -- are your yearly figures if you're raising tuition by 9% every year.

Tuition at $41,800 * 9% is $45,562 + $19,200 (assuming living expenses are the same, which they probably won't be) = $64,762. This is $1,672 off from your figure of $63,090. It gets further off as you go on:

09-10: 61,000
10-11: 64,762
11-12: 68,862
12-13: 73,332

Not to mention that these are all wrong anyway, because we need to do the 9% increase for 09-10 since 41,800 is 08-09's figure. Besides that, I believe these revised calculations are wrong, because I HIGHLY doubt that there will be a 9% increase each year... heaven help us if there is.

This is all a round about way of saying (HOPING!) that I think your figures are closer to reality (though I don't know where you came up with them since it wasn't the 9% increase), and I thank you for coming up with the process for approximating how much debt I'll come out with after 3 years of law school!

(It could be worse... a state school I was considering just emailed me with their tuition figures: 35% increase for in-state tuition from the previous year!)

Agreed. He's not really used to recruiting for a school with academic standards and UVA's in a tough position when it comes to recruiting already.

whoops, I was running a 5% increase while typing a 9% increase. Pretty dumb, thanks for catching that. I'd re-do the numbers, but so much of it is speculation, etc. that this should still be a decent (if low) ballpark estimate.

Also, here's where I got the 9% number (from the link in my original post)

2007-2008: 9.9% 8.6%
2006-2007: 8.6% 7.9%
2005-2006: 8.5% 7.2%
2004-2005: 8.5% 7.0%
2003-2004: 9.5% 6.5%

So the most recent hike was 10% for in-state and 8.6% for out of state.

Here's hoping the trend doesn't continue...

thesealocust: Thanks for all of that, but your math was wrong. One thing to consider is that my wife will lose her job if we move and I'm doubtful that she'll ever find one in C'ville. Our combined income is well over 6 figs, but living in San Diego takes a huge bite out of it.

Can your wife find a position in Richmond? Although its a 60 minute drive, its really not too bad of a commute (all interstate with traffic only when you hit Richmond)... My wife has been making the commute from Richmond to UVA for her Masters/ACNP for the past 2 years (we'll be moving to Cville 6 weeks after she graduates from UVA).

ok sounds good, but one last thing... anyone who does in fact care about lay prestige to the point that it would factor into his law school decision is pretty stupid, it's a perk sure, but not an actual factor to consider (unless you're going to law school just to say so...that's an expensive bragging right)
