My summary stayed the same, but your email has apparently caused a rush on the servers because I can't get to the letter-- connection refused.TheNerdProject wrote:Both but please don't feel panicked!IzziesGal wrote:No, but now I'm sufficiently panicked. Hopefully they pick up. I'll post anything I learn as soon I find out.
I wouldn't worry about the Federal Loans, they shouldn't be impacted by the budget issue. For me, though, I was banking on a waiver of non-resident tuition for which I qualify-- but I'm starting to doubt they'll waive anything in the current budget situation.

Called and spoke to FA. Apparently I'm missing a form they'll send me later on this week to fill out. Whew!

You can find two different Boalt shirts that look pretty decent here:

I think this is quite possibly the sexiest thing I have ever seen.

Can't wait to hang that on my wall one day.

Oh, and can I please add that I fly out in almost one month?!?!?! This is soooo crazy. It seems like just yesterday when I was filling out the application and dreaming that this would actually happen to me. I don't think I'm going to believe it until the first day of classes. Anyone else completely excited (and still in disbelief)?

Yeah, but my question is: if we can get one mailed to us for $175, why are we spending tens of thousands of dollars and three years of our lives to get one?

I had a minor freak-out session on June 13th when I realized orientation was two months away. I have the feeling 1L is just going to fly right by.TopCat wrote:I will be. Also, I might be hosting a TLS get together before classes start. I'll be at my aunt's house, which has a hot tub and is right on San Pablo Bay. I'll post details later.

Re: Berkeley Class of 2012
Is anyone living in Family Student Housing? I just got my offer for a unit, and it's not available until Aug 21st. They say that they're understaffed on maintenance and can't get the units ready as quickly as usual. Apparently, they are going to be making a lot of offers to students to move in in September. This is a huge pain in the ass for law students going to orientation on the 13th.

Good luck, TC. It can be done. Thankfully, I just signed a lease and sent the deposit, so we have a place to live. Last major stressor: employment for my wife. She's a vet tech, so anyone who is already there with animals recommend a good clinic/hospital?TopCat wrote:I will be. Once I lock down a place to live. Re: Berkeley Class of 2012
Thanks for the support guys. Could those of you who already have a place share approx rent (and bdrms), the type of lease (as in 6 months or month-to-month or 12 months etc) and the area (as in South of the campus or 1.5 miles North of the campus or the intersection Shattuck and X if you're OK with being more specific)? I will understand if you'd rather not disclose anything, though.
With the constraints I have (have to be near BART for SO, have to be within 4-5 mins walking distance from groceries), I can only find studios within my newly reduced budget unless I go to the Ashby area (which I really don't want to do). And the friend at Berkeley who is going to look up the neighborhoods and the apts for me insists that I find a place with a month-to-month lease (saving his bottom, I guess). This is proving near impossible.

Re: Berkeley Class of 2012
I am living on the north side, about 1 mile from campus and 1.5 miles from Boalt. If you type "Codornices Playground" into Google maps, that is about where I'll be living. I will be paying $850/month, with about another $50 for internet, cable, utiliities, for my own bedroom in a house with a few people (none of whom I know).TopCat wrote:Thanks for the support guys. It is a twelve month lease, June - June, but they took care of finding a subletter for me for June - August so I am technically on the hook for August 1 - May 31. I figure this will be ideal because if I stay in Berkeley next summer I can just renew the lease or find a place with a lease that starts in June, and if I am going to be somewhere else I won't be responsible for June and July.
My understanding is that this is a bit pricey to have a bunch of roommates, but I was willing to pay because the tenants have lived there for a while so I at least know they have had decent experiences with the landlord, they like the place, and everything will already be set up when I get there.
I spent a lot of time looking at Craigslist for apartments, and do think that finding a month-to-month lease will be difficult. Granted, this was from looking at Craigslist and not actually ever being in Berkeley, but I only saw year leases. I also only looked within about a mile radius of campus because I didn't want to live farther out.
Good luck with your search.
Edit: Want to add that my Craigslist search was limited to studios and one bedrooms - I wanted to live on my own, but couldn't pass up the ease of moving into a place with roommates where a lot of the hassle of moving was taken care of for me.

Re: Berkeley Class of 2012
A message from Dean Edley, just received by e-mail:
"I write to update you on the financial situation at the Law School in light of the on-going budget crisis in California and the consequent challenges for UC Berkeley. My central message is one of reassurance: We will continue to offer the best education of any law school on this or any nearby planet. At this point I foresee few if any budget cuts that will have material near-term effects on students.
The most significant program consequences to you will likely be some modest reduction in the number of small-enrollment offerings by adjunct lecturers, some slowing of the rapid expansion of the faculty we have pursued in recent years, perhaps some limitations on the scope of technical support on computer issues, and perhaps a slight reduction in the caloric content of the free lunches at speaking events.

On the positive side, it now appears likely that we will be able to follow through with the announcements I made earlier this spring concerning expansions in the Loan Repayment Assistance Program, more summer public interest fellowship grants, expansion of career services counseling, and several other measures. We will continue and expand the Boalt in D.C. program for a semester of study in Washington, D.C. We will continue our program of classroom renovations and construction. The West Terrace will be completed before classes begin. Excavation for the South Addition will be complete in a few days. Eight new core faculty members join us this summer, which gets us three-quarters of the way toward the goal set when I arrived five years ago of a 40% net increase in the faculty.

Please be clear, however, that the budget situation remains fluid. The Chancellor and Provost have not yet finalized the campus plans, in part because the Legislature remains tied in knots. Gordian, it seems. The Law School is in remarkably sound shape compared with most other campus units, and compared with most of our peer institutions. There are several reasons: our strategy of steadily raising tuition closer towards a benchmark of about 10% below the average of top-10 schools; the $125 million capital campaign has produced successive years of record alumni contributions; our low dependence on state appropriations, relative to other campus units, because the state support for the Law School was disproportionately cut during the recession earlier in the decade; the relatively small contribution of endowment income in our revenue stream, relative to other top-10 schools. The last two points mean we are more insulated than we would otherwise be from sharp state budget cuts and the Wall Street meltdown. Make no mistake, times will be tight. However, I simply do not expect that we will face the extraordinary budget reductions hitting many of our peer schools."
My fingers are crossed that the bolded part remains true.

Anyone know if joining a state bar association (other than California) will be a red flag when applying for residency status as a 2L?

As long as you meet Boalt's residency requirements I don't understand why it would be a problem. Are you leaving CA after you graduate? That shouldn't matter, I was just curious as to how many fellow Boalts plan on bolting after they get their degrees.IzziesGal wrote:Anyone know if joining a state bar association (other than California) will be a red flag when applying for residency status as a 2L?

We're planning on staying, as of now. My husband will still be working on his bachelor's out there, and since he is going for IT/comp sci, it's pretty much the best location in the country for career prospects.Drake014 wrote:As long as you meet Boalt's residency requirements I don't understand why it would be a problem. Re: Berkeley Class of 2012
Look at it as a risk/reward proposition. What benefit do you get by joining the said State Bar Association today that you would not get should you wait until you graduate? Are those benefits worth risking over $30K that you'd pay in non-resident tuition in the event you got a registrar/residency clerk who is a stickler for the "intent to make it permanent" bit. I've quoted a couple of things from http://registrar.berkeley.edu/Residency/legalinfo.htmlIzziesGal wrote:We're planning on staying, as of now. The underlined clause is key I think. For while joining another state's bar association may not technically be licensing for professional practice in another state, it could give the person adjudicating your claim reason to reject your application for residency. Just my $1/50th, but I wouldn't risk it.Berkeley Registrar's Website wrote:Who is a California Resident? If . . . you want to be classified as a resident for tuition purposes, you must have established your continuous presence in California more than one year immediately preceding the residence determination date for the semester during which you propose to attend the University, and you must have given up any previous residence. You must also present objective evidence that you intend to make California your permanent home . . . .
Establishing Intent to Become a California Resident Indications of your intent to make California your permanent residence can include registering to vote and voting in California elections; [etc., etc.]; licensing for professional practice in California; and the absence of these indications in other states during any period for which you claim California residence. Documentary evidence is required. All relevant indications will be considered in determining your classification. Your intent will be questioned if you return to your prior state of residence when the University is not in session.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
