Yes, I'm going to West Virginia for a week and Spain for two weeks. I'll be in the northern, non-spanish part of spain. I'm looking forward to finding some Asturian music. I'm glad you approve--I will take photographic inspiration from you!joshikousei wrote:you know, many people here think of spain as north africa. i approve.

Well, you can spend August making day trips to Mystic, I suppose. I'll be back in NH on 8/3, if only briefly, and will give you a shout.franfair wrote:I'll be getting into town next weekend (8/1) if you're still around. After a summer of beach bumming and visiting friends there are sadly no more travels in store for me.

So, now that we've gotten the itinerary for all the "mandatory" events for orientation, how many do you guys plan on actually attending?

Was I supposed (or mandated) to send Yale anything from my UG institution? I feel like I am/was, but I don't know exactly what and I haven't received an e-mail saying I haven't yet. Just wondering...

Re: Yale Law School Class of 2012
Hey Yale people!
Those of you who don’t know, I’m going to be going to HLS next year and I was talking to a few of my future classmates and we thought it might be a neat idea if we could get a forum going (either inside or outside of TLS) where people at YLS and HLS could network, chat, and maybe organize meet-ups IRL every once in a blue moon. I’m interested in government and public service and, especially considering recent history, odds are we will be seeing each other throughout our professional careers so it might not be a bad idea to start now!
However, before we get going any more on this idea, we wanted to see if anyone in New Haven would be interested. I thought this would be a good place to start gauging interest. Any takers?

Yeah, thanks, but I'm hoping that a lot of people have matured past the "ew, you are my rival!" stage. I mean, at sporting events and the like, yeah, it can be fun but anything more than this is just silly.Capercaillie wrote:Lookie Lookieiagolives wrote:Hey Yale people!

Kidding aside, the idea is a good one. Perhaps it will evolve to include a sports tournament à la the Deans' Cup down the line. A vibrant rivalry is not that bad a thing, you know.iagolives wrote:Yeah, thanks, but I'm hoping that a lot of people have matured past the "ew, you are my rival!" stage. Ha, as if the folks on TLS aren't naturally disposed to find the HLS/YLS people pompous (whether we in fact are or not), we have to suggest a group in which only HLS and YLS students can participate? I understand the reasoning and appreciate the intentions, but it seems a bit on the 'holier-than-thou' side. Maybe a HYSCCN group or something (particularly as Columbia and NYU are also in the northeast), but just HLS and YLS seems a bit much.iagolives wrote:Hey Yale people!

In iago's defense (which isn't really needed--I don't think anyone is accusing him of elitism), I think he's probably the least pompous poster on TLS. There's obviously a good deal of overlap between the applicant pools of the two schools (e.g., The Yale Waiting Room), so students at the two schools tend to be familiar with each other already.

Re: Yale Law School Class of 2012
Ha, thanks bgc. I wasn't going to respond because I always feel badly crashing y'all's thread, but it really had nothing to do with the "I only associate with HLS/YLS people." It was more that there is 1) a big rivalry between HLS and YLS which I thought it would be cool to try and bridge, 2) they are relatively close, thus making it at least fesable to hang out IRL on occasion in the future (which is why I didn't include SLS when it is, let's face it, at least as good as both of our schools, no matter what the rankings may say), 3) because, as bgc noted, there is a huge overlap between our applicant pools and, as I got to know a decent number of you from the waiting room, I really woudl like to keep in touch and 4) because we all will be very busy next year and, as someone who coordinates a lot of things, I know that it is hard enough to work with two different groups in two different states without throwing on 5-6 more groups and states.bgc wrote:In iago's defense (which isn't really needed--I don't think anyone is accusing him of elitism), I think he's probably the least pompous poster on TLS. If this thing takes off (which I'm still not sure it will,) I would be thrilled if it would expand to include more schools and whatnot. However, the key to success, as my father always told me, is to start small and grow. If I came across as arrogant or pompous, I'm really sorry. Looking back, I see how this could be read this way. However, please know this was the furthest from my mind. I think those of you who have dealt w/ me on TLS before would attest to this.
Also, I apologize for my habit of making numbered lists. It's something I fall back into when I feel defensive/hurt and its something I am still working on.
Ok, leaving you all in peace.... now!

Just to be clear, I have nothing but respect for iagolives and I know that he didn't intend his suggestion to come across that way--I was just meaning to say that it ran the risk of looking that way, and that many would probably
it as a pompous exercise in self-congratulation.

anyway, I'm pretty sure that there's no deadline for that computer assistance loan, can someone confirm this? Also, how do I go about starting one up?
I emailed Pat Barnes a little while ago about it and haven't heard back so was just seeing what you all knew about it.
