Re: UVA Class of 2012
OK, I Googled it... apparently its a known issue with Facebook. There website says "If you are seeing a message that your group or event is unavailable right now, this is a temporary result of site maintenance, and is not related to the content of your group or event. Please try accessing it in a few hours, when it should be available again with all content restored." I was worried that I was banned from the group or something, which would have made no sense.

You are dead wrong. Do you realize the difference between Mich/Penn/Boalt/UVa and Vandy is HUGE in biglaw and clerkships. You are making assumptions that are simply innacurate.aph wrote:showNprove wrote:Are you from Tennessee? No, not from Tennessee, or the South. Most people I know (non-lawyers) think UVa is just another state school. My point was, that at the top of the class, there isn't much that is unattainable at Vandy that would be attainable at UVa. Of course you have more options at UVa and more cushion room. But 72k is nothing to sneeze at.
All of us got offered money (or could've) from lower schools, there's a tradeoff that we all try to quantify, and we make our decision where to attend. There is a reason people on this thread are so sure the 72k from Vandy isn't worth it, they likely faced the same decision.
AND GET OVER THE LAY PRESTIGE, IT MEANS NOTHING!!!!!!!
Of course Vanderbilt has a more impressive name than "University of [State]." Your (or at least my) future employer will not care about lay prestige, but legal prestige, and UVa has a very prestigious name in law.
If you want to impress some ditzy spinner at the bar, sure go to Vanderbilt so you can sound quasi-ivy league, shit, go to Emory, that's a pretty big name in the south. If you're worried about legal employment and opportunities, lay prestige means nothing, and MVPB>>>>Vandy.

I completely agree. Keep in mind we're all going to be in the same class next year. No point in starting bad blood already. Besides, UVa law students are supposed to the happiest law students around.showNprove wrote:This is getting ridiculous and ruining our class thread!

Re: UVA Class of 2012
When I was there in the fall I just bought a plain UVA hat. I liked it the best out of all of them and evidently I have an odd shaped head because I couldn't find any other ones that fit.

No, I was quite disappointed in their T-shirt selection. I want one with the two sabers that says "Virginia Law," but they didn't have anything like that.jennyhoo wrote:Soo... did anyone buy anything cool at the bookstore during ASW?

I actually have an orange shirt like that, and I got it in the bookstore there. Maybe they were out of them, but they are with the folded shirts when you walk in.Fup wrote:No, I was quite disappointed in their T-shirt selection. Look, 1337Law gave it to you straight-up. I'll try to put this a little more nicelyaph wrote:showNprove wrote:Are you from Tennessee? You are simply giving bad/misleading advice. I wouldn't fault anyone for taking the 72K at Vandy....there are multiple reasons why one might do so. But I shudder at the thought that someone might actually use your advice as a basis for passing up UVA in this situation. UVA is a historically top 10 school, while Vandy as recently as a few years ago was around 18 or so. Vandy is coming on strong and is building a solid reputation. Vandy grads don't starve, but to say that the firm and clerkship placement between the two schools are equal is flat-out wrong. My point is, don't take the scholly at Vandy b/c you think the job obtions are equal with UVA.
Now, about the "lay" prestige. We are grown-ups trying to make grown-up decisions. Grown-ups should not use "lay" prestige as a factor in deciding between UVA and Vandy. If you want to impress Grandma, I can think of a number of schools that surpass half of the T14 in "lay" prestige. Emory and Notre Dame come to mind. Heck, in Florida, UF has huge "lay" prestige. Don't worry, all of the UVA co-eds will be impressed when you tell them you go to UVA Law, if that's what concerns you.
I'm not trying to be mean, but I don't want people making ill-informed choices on one of the biggest decisions of their lives.

It's looking too much like a TLS debate thread and not enough like a completely off-topic/holy shit we're excited for August thread.

Re: UVA Class of 2012
Oh yeah, I remember those. Unfortunately, they were out of larges, and the Internet store doesn't have them. Hopefully they'll have more when I get there in August. I guess since it serves a student population of only about 1,100, it's understandable that they don't have a million different choices like my undergraduate college's store.SteelersandGators wrote:I actually have an orange shirt like that, and I got it in the bookstore there. For some reason, the bookstore hasn't had the standard navy UVA Law shirt for months.
