is anyone else bringing a pet? i am bringing my 80 lb golden retriever Hemingway with me. one apartment (Library Gardens) on craig's list is willing to work with me but wants to charge a $500 fee up front plus an extra $35/MONTH.

Is that the standard??!!

anyone find any dog-friendly apartments?

100 lb boxer/Rhodesian ridgeback mix and our cat. We are looking for houses rather than apts, but there seems to be stuff out there.

If the $500 fee is non-refundable, then no I'd say that isn't really standard, but it does look like the going rate for a refundable pet deposit. Haven't ever heard of a bump in rent either but that amounts to another $420/year.

I guess you could just factor that $920 into your decision making process by comparing it to other places that charge $100 more per month (for the Ac Year less if 12 mos).....good luck.

I've found that additional pet rents are pretty standard across the Bay Area. It's pretty much unheard of here in Northern NJ, so my hubby and I were pretty shocked at first until ALL of the apartments we checked out had additional monthly pet rents. From what we have seen, they range anywhere from $25 - 50 extra per month. (Ours is $35)

The $500 pet security deposit sounds about right as well. Ours is an additional $600. What doesn't seem kosher is the nonrefundable part. Can you negotiate with them on this? Perhaps ask if you can get the deposit back, provided that there is no damage? I don't understand why they would pocket the money just for the sake of doing it....isn't the point of a pet security deposit to ensure that funds are available for any damages caused by your pet? If you're pet hasn't damaged the unit, you should be eligible to get your money back.....this sounds shady to me.

this was very sobering. thanks for this. i definitely want to do public interest. i probably would feel some resentment as well.for those of you who didn't get a chance to read the piece yet, it is about "deferred associates" -- recent law school grads hired by law firms but who are not able to start immediately because the firm cannot afford to pay them. So the firm offers to pay them a lower salary ($60,000) plus benefits for a year if they take a public interest job. The non-profit organization doesn't have to pay anything to have them on board. Because the non-profits are also strapped for cash, they end up taking these deferred associates over other law student grads who spent their 3 years doing the volunteer work, externships, clinics, in preparation for a public interest career.

i liked the quote in the piece from a recent law grad: "If you think about the haves and the have-nots in this country, it's really two different sides," she said. "As corporate attorneys, these deferred associates may end up fighting against whatever their public-interest organization advocates for."

that will probably happen to many of these people.

hey is anyone going to read any of the books from the optional reading list? i went ahead and picked up "Simple Justice: The History of Brown vs. Board of Education and Black America's Struggle for Equality" from the library since it seemed the most interesting to me.

So do we still get to call ourselves a public school if the state cuts us off entirely?

The reading list hurts my head. I probably will just read Getting to Maybe and that's that. And lots of fiction. Law can wait.

There seem to be a good many interesting reads. I might pick up a few for leisure reading while I travel this summer. I would like to read Agent Orange on Trial, and perhaps one of the more general American Legal system choices. Nothing too heavy (both literally and figuratively) though.
Good choice Amy! That one sounds really interesting. Got good editorial reviews on Amazon.

i'm posting a lot today. it's slow at work. anyway, if anyone is thinking of getting a macbook, they have a special for us students. purchase any of them and you get a free IPODtouch. i'm excited because it'll act as my PDA and can sync directly with microsoft outlook. also, you can get the laptop cheaper if you get it directly from the berkeley store.

Not sure if any of you are college football fans but Berkeley's team is in most analysts' pre-season Top 15 nationally this year.

For any of you interested in making it to some games, the following is the link for student season tickets, which are only $84! --LinkRemoved-- . I'm jumping on this deal even though I'll probably only make it to 2-3 games (and the Stanford game at Palo Alto, aka "The Big Game"). For 50-yard line seats, possibly front row if you get there early, it's a great deal!

There are some pretty good matchups at home this season, including games against Maryland, USC, Oregon State and Arizona. Below is the complete schedule (home games in bold). Sorry if this post annoys anyone but I'm like "Fever Pitch" for sports, especially college football.

GO BEARS!

DATE OPPONENT TIME (PST)
9/05 Maryland 7:00 PM
9/12 Eastern Washington TBA
9/19 @ Minnesota TBA
9/26 @ Oregon 12:30 PM
10/03 USC 5:00 PM
10/17 @ UCLA TBA
10/24 Washington State TBA
10/31 @ Arizona State TBA
11/07 Oregon State TBA
11/14 Arizona TBA

11/21 @ Stanford TBA
12/05 @ Washington TBA

I tried to buy the tickets and it said "student ID you entered could not be validated." Anyone else get this?!

Yay!!! I know at least three other people that are interested (both 1Ls and 2Ls) so we might have a little Berkeley Law section at the games!

I just tried and got the same thing. Maybe we have to be registered students (i.e. registered for classes)? What gives? I'm going to call and find out!

Just got off the phone with the ticket office (they were so nice!). So the student ID database hasn't been updated yet, but you can call and place your order directly with them and still get the same deal plus a $6 processing fee. The number to call is (510) 64-BEARS.

Hey, just wondering if anybody here was considering Manville or Jackson house. I plan on sending in my application tomorrow and wanted to see if there was any last-minute advice before ordering my choices. Thanks.

You guys might wanna avoid the USC game, unless you want to watch the team get absolutely destroyed  , I cant wait!

Not if we figure out the QB position. That is, if we get any kind of passing game PLUS Jahvid Best running the ball--the most explosive player in college football this year--SC's going down!!! Also, don't forget that like half your team got drafted last year and this is said to be a rebuilding year for USC. GO BEARS!

Oh yeah, ESPN's Ted Miller says we're a "legitimate BCS contender" and the team with a legitimate chance of unseating the Trojans: http://myespn.go.com/blogs/pac10/0-9-83 ... -Call.html We shall see.. either way, it's a good time to be a California Golden Bear!

Sorry to keep asking the same annoying question, but has anyone seen any updates on their GradPlus or private loans? I was told by Finaid that the loans would hit sometime in the beginning of May, but I haven't received any info yet. Thanks, guys!

It's not annoying! - I have been checking daily for this too. I am also not seeing grad plus, only the Stafford.

Also, I don't think my SLR has been processed.

Anyone else?
I sent my e-mail request for GradPLUS about a week ago and was told that Grad PLUS loans will be added to student records "in the next few weeks."

I also haven't had my SLR processed but I only submitted it about a week ago.

It seems like we're all being told they will be added "in the next few weeks," regardless of when we sent it in. =) I'm going to hold off on calling until next week, since the last email from Dean Tom (the one with the updated contact list) mentioned that we would be getting some materials this week. I'm going to wait to see if any info about the loans is included in that I guess.

My SLR went though, but that's probably because I am out of state. Yours is for in-state, which will probably take longer to check into and process.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
