Just visited FSU. Everyone was very nice. Some thing I gleamed for those who are completely uninformed about FSU/Tallahassee.

[*]The law school is the only part of FSU that isn't directly on campus, its actually about two blocks away. Old'ish looking outside, but very nice inside. Classrooms are what you would expect, stadium seating, plugs at every desk, etc. Gorgeous "cafeteria". Gorgeous mock courtroom. They recently bought a courthouse that sits across the street and are hoping to close the road, and make it all green kind of forming a quad between the two buildings, but it seems to be something that won't happen by the time we're done.
[*]Parking at FSU is apparently bad. However like I said the law school is two blocks away and has its own parking lot. I don't know if that makes a difference. I didn't ask. I should have. I'm sorry.
[*]They seem to pride themselves on a more cordial atmosphere between students and professors, one professor who was very nice taking about 5 minutes to stop by while I was on the tour to talk to me.
[*]They claim a 99% employment after 9 months of graduation.
[*]They also said they have no plans to have to reduce anything due to budget cuts in the state which is/was a major concern of mine.

The town:

[*]Major concern was Tallahassee, have heard it described as "Tallatrashy", "Hick town", etc etc. From what i gathered from 24 hours there, it really seems to be your average town. New parts, old parts. No parts generally seemed unsafe or worry some. All the major stores you know and love in case you only like shopping at brand name places. Although, in case your basing your decision on malls/movie theaters, Tallahassee lacks. One major mall which is anything but inspiring. And one major movie theater which is definitely not the best I've been in. Then again we wont have time for movies, or money for shopping, so who cares right? :)
[*]The town is about 20 miles across, with "capital circle" kind of circling the border and then major roads going into the center of town. But again 20 miles across = small. Meaning from the furthest apartments on the outskirts of town, your only talking a 10 mile drive to campus.
[*]From what I gathered: West side of town = undergrad/party central. 3 of the towns 4 universities are on the west side. FSU is right in the center. The east side of town appears more as the suburb/family side of town. With some brand new apartment complexes, and new shopping plaza's being built. Defenitly more the area I am personally looking at.
[*]For those concerned about location over quiet, there are places right next to the law school. However again, thats only if you don't care about quiet, as they are right next to a couple of fraternity houses (also right across from the law school).
[*]There apparently is a bus system in town to help alleviate traffic to FSU. It runs every 40 minutes and is free to FSU students. Once you get to FSU there is a FSU bus that goes around the campus every 10 minutes. A few of the apartment complexes are right on the bus line so that you wouldn't have to drive to school.
[*]In case your trying to plan out your costs, Comcast appears to be the only cable & cable/internet provider. Embarq also appears to be in the area if you prefer DSL.

Can't really think of anything else. I only visited about 5 apartment complexes, all of the more pricier ones, but if anyone has any questions about anything else I'll do my best to answer.

well. we have two malls and at least 4 movie theaters. also, tallahassee is a lot bigger than you may have gathered in just 24 hours. I went to 4 years of UG and never once had a problem parking.... if you're trying to get in a lot right in the middle of campus you may have some problems (mostly b/c freshman who live in the dorms dominate those spots), but there are 5 HUGE parking lots on and around campus, in addition to all the little streets around the school where parking is legal. It's definitely not an "issue." We do have all the major stores, but there are also tons of local places like local college-y restaurants and really cute boutiques ranging from impossibly expensive to really affordable. Also, if you've lived in any city bigger than tallahassee you will not be too frustrated w/ traffic... Although it can get a little backed up around rush hour, coming from Tampa I can tell you tallahassee traffic is NOTHING. Tallahassee can be a huge party town if that's what you're looking for, but you'll also find tons of others who don't partake in all the bar hopping. Overall, I found it enjoyable enough to spend another 3 years in and could not be more excited to be admitted/attending :)

I heard the parking comment form numerous people I talked too. Maybe I was given bad information, but just saying what I was told. Again, as I stated, no idea how parking is at the law school since its separate of the main campus.

I found the town to be very nice. However to say the town is "bigger then i imagined" is really not true. The town is definitely a smaller town. Its not a hamlet by any stretch. But I come from a mid-sized town (really an area of 3 towns consisting of about 200,000 total), and I have more movie theaters & malls within 5 miles of my house then Tallahassee had in the whole town. Not that it matters, not that I'm complaining, again just giving impressions. I can definitely see people coming from larger cities sort of having a culture shock.

Anyway, I was just giving my impressions. I'm really pumped to go there. Look forward to meeting you all in the fall.

Parking isn't really a problem anymore. You have 4 options:
1) The law school parking lot. It's very small; if this was the only option then parking would be a problem. If you have an 8am class you can get a spot here, but it's tough after that. A gate key from parking services is needed to access the lot.
2) The civic center parking lot. It's across the street from the law school, and you have to pay to park here every semester. It's expensive--I think $160 or so, but a lot of people park here. I did my first semester.
3) FSU Parking garage. This has been open less than a year and it's where I parked last semester. It is located very near the law school. If you look on google maps it is at W Pensacola Ave and Railroad Ave. When Google filmed the 'street view' it was still under construction, but it's completed now. This garage is huge and will almost always have spots. All of your classes will start in the morning anyway when parking is easy to find.
4) Public parking along the streets around the law school. You can park along the streets of the law school. You can park for up to 4 hours before the meter expires, and that will cost you 4 quarters.

I suggest that you get the free decal from the school and pay the $15 for the gate card. That way you can use the school lot if it is open and the parking garage when it isn't.
The lot fills up early, even for 8:00 classes, if you think about it, virtually every 1L will have an 8:00 class.
I always bought a pass for the civic center but I would no longer recommend that with the garage. I would suggest that everyone invest in an umbrella, the garage is a bit of a walk if it is raining.

I graduated from FSU Law in Dec, took and passed the bar in Feb and just got hired. If I can answer any questions OTHER than about housing please let me know.

Is your job with a firm, govt, other? What kind of internships did you have earlier in law school? Also, if you don't mind saying, how strong was your GPA/class rank?

Thanks!

Where would you recommend living? For my first year, I've decided to get a 1BR apartment, preferably located close enough to the law school where I can ride my bicycle to class with ease -- so somewhere within a mile or so. If that's not feasible, I'm willing to drive, but I'd prefer the bike option. I'm also looking to spend under $750 per month after utilities and such. Am I being realistic? Can I find a place that isn't a hovel operating under that kind of budget?

So many questions, but thankfully I have the time.

As I said I am good for answering questions abt the school but NOT housing. I lived 30 minutes south of Tally in Wakulla county. I would recommed that choice but very few students look beyond the city limits. I do not know Tally very well, I do not know apartment rates or how best to get to the school during morning rush hour.

Now, for things I can comment on. I was hired by the 14th judical circuit as a prosecutor. I had other job offers in similar circuits that I turned down and had more interviews pending when I accepted this offer. I did not work during my time at law school but I did do a 12 credit externship my 2L summer. I cannot answer as to my GPA or class rank as I never bothered to look. I never listed them on my resume and no interviewer asked. As a result of taking classes during the summer and the externship I was able to graduate a semester early and only needed 7 credits my final semester.

My recommendations and suggestions go more directly to classes, professors, strategy for picking classes, etc. Think of law school as a river, many students decide to be boats that float wherever the current carries them, and they graduate on time and become successful lawyers; other students decide to direct the path of their boat and make very aggressive choices as to schedules and classes and they also become happy lawyers. For what it is worth, I recommend the second option.

Ok, I'm not part of the 2012 class but I wanted to see if anyone else's status changed on Friday. I haven't heard from FSU since January so I think I'm getting the boot today.

I'm visiting Tallahassee this weekend and would like to get an apartment within a similar range. Has anyone decided where they want to live or have any advice?

I tried using apartments.com and then looking at the places on apartmentratings.com, but i also found quite a few places on apartmentratings.com that weren't on apartments.com.

My price range is a bit higher then yours so i wasn't looking at the same places, but there's seems to be lots of decent complexes in the area.

BTW, apartmentratings is somewhat helpful, the somewhat being you have to wade through 5 bad reviews for each place of "omg i saw a spider in the hallway", which I assume are people who never lived in FL before they rented that apartment.

Just signed a lease at Arbror View Apts. All of the Arbor Properties are really nice, everyone should look into them.

Does anyone know by when we will receive our class schedules? Also is anyone attending the optional orientation and does anyone actually know what's the optional orientation about instead of the mandatory orientation?

Thanks!

I doubt we'll be getting our schedules for awhile since the class isn't finalized yet.

Do you know when the mandatory/optional orientatioms are? I called about 2 weeks ago and they said orientation was "tentatively" set for August 18th - 21st but she seemed very unsure in general.

Btw, the class book list was updated on the website and some of the 1L Profs have listed the book lists for their classes. I imagine we won't get our schedules for a while but at least this gives you some view of what you may need.

You should have your schedules by mid summer. If you can attend the one week pre-law school course that the school offers, it will really give you a heads up with classes and professors. The mandatory 2 day orientation right b4 classes start is also very worth it especially if you cannot attend the 1 wk course.

When is the one week pre-law course typically offered? I would assume just prior to the 2 day mandatory orientation.

Visited campus today as well as 5 apartment complexes.

I'll try to answer any questions, but keep in mind they will be from a out-of-state 0L. I do think some of the info on here (this thread) isn't as detailed as it could be. There are many more living options than what has been offered.

Also, I'm heavily leaning toward FSU, so I guess this is my official entry into c/o 2012.

I am a rising 2L at FSU. Class schedules were sent out last year on August 12th, so don't get your hopes up checking every day (which I did).

I did not attend the optional orientation last year but everyone who did seemed to enjoy it. Also, it gave some people a head start on getting to know people. The optional orientation last summer was run by Dean Weidner and he gave Property-related lectures for the week and they had a sample exam at the end to give everyone a taste of what one would be like. Having said that, I don't think I missed out on anything by not attending.

Has anybody else been on their admitted student website? They posted a recommended reading list. I was thinking it would have a couple of books on there - I was wrong. There are 35 recommended books, and the few that I looked at online are like 300-350 pages. Seems a little overkill.

On a lighter note the book that is required for the orientation looks interesting.
