Re: Washington & Lee Class of 2012
Does anyone know how quickly I should try to find housing in Lexington? I'm graduating this May, and I was going to look for a 1 bedroom apartment sometime around the 21st. Is that too late to wait, or are apartments plentiful?

I'm still waiting to hear something about scholarships. April 15 has come and gone, but no word from W&L. I desperately need some financial aid as sticker at W&L plus undergrad loans would put me over 200k in debt...ugh.

Re: Washington & Lee Class of 2012
Hey everyone,
I placed my seat deposit at W&L a few weeks ago after visiting a few schools (BU, Fordham, American, W&L, and W&M). Unless I get a much more attractive response from BU, looks like I'll be in Lexington in the Fall. I'm strongly considering buying a house and would be looking for a few (1-3, depending on the size of the house) other 1Ls to room with. I certainly plan on being very productive at the law school, but I'm a social person, so having a few roommates to get involved with quickly and early would be beneficial (not to mention the cost savings of having roommates).
I probably won't go looking until early summer (unless I get a negative response from BU soon), but I can say for sure I'm looking for something within reasonable walking distance to the school and downtown and decently sized so we won't be in each other's hair all the time. This is a little early, but is anyone interested? Feel free to PM me or respond publicly (I'm sure the other soon-to-be 1Ls wouldn't mind some additional info on their classmates...).
If nothing else, I'd like to make some early contact and get to know the rest of the people I'll be spending the next 3 years with!
Oh, I suppose it would help to know a little about me as well: I'm a 24-year old male who lives in Florida. I guess I would technically be considered a nontrad applicant because I graduated from UF (Go Gators!) in 2007 and have been working full time since. Quick note about my education - I will have also completed my MBA in Finance by the time I get to Lexington. I enjoy sports, going to the gym, socializing, and just generally having fun. I should note here that part of the reason why I chose W&L had to do with the perceived camaraderie within the school and the intermural sports aspect (while I am very interested in playing just about any intermural, I should disclose that I am pretty mediocre at just about everything).
Any advice/response/comment would be welcomed!

Re: Washington & Lee Class of 2012
I am terrible at basketball but I enjoy it and would love to pick it up again to get in better shape.
I wonder if there are a lot of full courts around for students to use?
Love 3 on 3 or 4 on 4 or 5 on 5 full court games. Fun no matter how bad you are and a good workout running up and down the court.
Finding 6 guys who would want to play on a Friday afternoon after class or something shouldn't be too hard.
Hurt my shoulder, back, knees, and ankle in my football days, so I'll have to avoid weights and full contact sports now.
I'm from Jax, Florida and have an MBA, so we have a little in common.
Socially I'm a boring, conservative, nerdy married guy, so I won't be doing any partying/drinking/after hours socializing.
We're heading up next week, hopefully I can find a place in 2 days.

Anyone else from VA going to W&L?
I am also looking forward to some athletic interaction once we move up in July. Completely lacking of a bball skillset, but I definitely love to play the game. Same with soccer, haha.
We found a house in Buena Vista, and are coming up to sign the lease the first week of May.

For everyone whose spouses will be looking for work...why don't you let us know what fields they work in so that when TLSers go down looking for housing they can "keep and ear out." I have a feeling a lot of jobs are found by word of mouth down there...

My experience with James Moore was really positive. The woman who works with rentals there is really nice. And honest. She told me when places had problems and didnt sugar coat things.presh wrote:Has anyone had any dealing with Colonna & Associates Real Estate as far as renting an apartment? If so, opinions?
underwhere759, you went through James Moore Realty? It sounds like you had a pretty good experience, but please correct me if I'm mistaken.
Since I am so far away, I can't actually come see the apartmentsso any opinions as to the trustworthiness of agents/landlords is appreciated.

Re: Washington & Lee Class of 2012
Well, I rented a place in town. Bottom floor of a very old house, separate private entrance for the upstairs tenant, who is a quiet single middle aged man.
Everything I wanted - good appliances, quiet street, also hard wood floors were a plus.
Landlord is a pretty cool guy. Basically said decorate however you want, repaint walls if you want, whatever.
Parking lot at the law school seemed VERY small. I hope it won't be a big issue. I hate walking long distances to class during the late summer.
Didn't really look around the school to much. Don't really care what the classrooms look like. Just want a good education and a good job when it's done. Building was in a quiet area away from everything.

Did you all know that W&L has a confirmed case of swine flu on campus?

Maybe this will scare people away and open up a spot for me on the waiting list.

Probably about to withdraw, got a waitlist acceptance with $. However, we had signed a lease on a house in Buena Vista and it is still available. It is a 3BR house for only $700/month. I thought it was a steal and was really looking forward to it. Everything has been remodeled really well, landlords are actually in the remodeling business. It's about a 10 minute drive to campus and the neighborhood is great. Also comes with a huge yard with a few large trees. Perfect for a law family or for 3 roomies. PM me if anyone wants to see some pictures and to get landlord info.
Edited to specify that it is a house not apartment/condo/townhouse.

Just got in off the waitlist
and feel the need to join the housing discussion. Unfortunately, I wont be able to visit before school starts in August - and I am wondering if there are any females around that may be interested in finding a 2br somewhere close to campus . . .
Also, for those of you who have looked around, did it appear that a lot of the options were not nice? Or were the majority definitely livable?

I recently declined my offer of admission. Great school, but lack of scholarship money made me choose a peer school that offered me $$ over it.
Good look WLers. One more spot is open for you.

HAVE APT, NEED ROOMMATE
I have accepted W&L Law's offer of admission and I am going here. I am currently a W&L undergrad (for the next week at least). I have recently signed a lease on an awesome 2 bedroom apt in downtown Lexington and I need somebody to share the apt with. The place is on Main and McDowell. It's a short walk from all the Lexington bars and a longer walk or a short bike/car ride to campus. Here's the details:
2 bedrooms
3 bathrooms
2 studies
Living room
Dining room
Kitchen (with dishwasher, fridge, stove)
Washer and dryer
Central AC/heating
Free parking
The apt is $800 per month (split between the two of us) and that includes water and gas. Please contact me if you or somebody you know might be interested or need more details.

Re: Washington & Lee Class of 2012
I'm on AT&T, and I just went this last weekend to get an apartment (which was successful!). My phone worked out just fine most of the time. There were a couple times I went out into the country to look at places and the reception was spotty, but I think that's normal in less populated areas. If you want to stay with AT&T, I don't think you'd have any problems.presh wrote:
3) Can anyone with service from AT&T tell me if service is good in Lexington (and VA in general)? I can't seem to find anything helpful online. My contract is up, and I'm trying to decide whether to take the upgrade and go two more years or jump ship for another carrier.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
