The thought of spending more than $20,000 a year for ten years to pay off my loans isn't enticing, but this is T14 we're talking about, so maybe I'll just have to suck it up.

As for housing: I just recently learned about my accommodations and roommate myself, and I'm pretty sure they'll be making housing decisions through at least mid-June.

My sentiments exactly. We're in the same boat. Except for the housing thing. I'm still hanging on that.

If you're only going to be paying off $200k total after interest by the end of the life of your loan, that's a bargain.

Yeah, this is probably the way that a lot of housing WL people will wind up getting places in Gee-Whiz. Every person that sent in a deposit to Gtown but got into a school they were WLed at means 1 more available apartment.

Yeah, it'll probably be considerably more than just $200k. 8.5% interest over 10 years for the Fed Plus loans. According to Gtown I'll be paying a bit more than $180,000 alone over ten years for the Fed Plus loans...and that doesn't even get into the Staffords.
Fortunately, it looks like I'll avoid having to do any private lending. Huzzah to the feds.

Anybody else considering buying? It seems crazy, but with current interest rates mortgage will be cheaper than rent.

I also thought about buying, but it isn't as easy as it seems. Also it doesn't make sense if you don't intend to stay in DC. If you can come up with a hefty down payment and intend to stay in DC for at least 5 years, then it makes sense.

I have been trying to find out the same thing. GULC has been really uncommunicative. They still have up the welcome letter that talks about the Jan. EA reception. I'm looking for information about Orientation and pretty much anything other than the same information that's been up on the site for the past 6 months. Hopefully we'll get the information soon. I thought that a week after second deposits, they might have sent an email with more information. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Does anyone know how the process for applying for a parking permit if one lives on campus works? How much do they cost? What are my odds of actually getting one?

Oh everyone got that e-mail? I thought it was just me. I felt special :(

EDIT: I'm not quite sure what I expected, but this is really expensive. Maybe I can do without a car.

I think you can definitely live without a car. I'll be in Gewirz, and while I find the lack of neighborhood amenities like grocery stores disappointing, the shuttle service should help with that. There are also car sharing services like Zipcar. Not to mention good ol' carjacking.

Do people really ride bikes around Wash D.C.? The idea of a bike kind of appeals to me as I rode one around all throughout UG, but riding one around a major city seems kind of odd to me...

DC is pretty quaint as far as major cities go; I would definitely ride a bike in DC, but I wouldn't in a city like NY or LA.

On another note, when are you other Gewirz people planning on moving in?

Hey, I didn't get the email! I'm not living in Gewirz, though... was it just for on-campus peeps?

I'll be in Gewirz and it looks like, according to the agreement, that people can move in the 22nd of August. So unless GTown finally decides to update its orientation page with additional information, that's when I'll be moving in!

LA is unfeasible but NY is actually very convenient. But yeah, DC should not be a problem.

The same here about the website update! I mean come on, it's been months since they have added anything new, unless you count the curriculum link. I would really like to have some kind of forum on the page or just more information. That being said, what was the email you guys got? I didn't get one. I would have thought we would have at least heard something from Dean Cornblatt since it's been a week since our second deposits were due.

Yup, there are two Zipcars in the alley basically behind Gewirtz and another few about a block away, which is helpful. Plus, there's a really nice Safeway at 6th & K NW, which, by DC standards, is right next door!

Hmm.
I sent my confirmation form regarding on-campus housing last Tuesday (nine days ago.)
Still haven't received a message back noting they've received it -- and they'd need it by the 14th.
Does this merit a phone call? Or are the rest of y'all in similar straits?

Nothing exciting...this whole thing has been sort of anticlimactic. I agree; we at least need a forum!!!

Where is everyone? Why is this board so dead? Is everyone on vacation or just waiting for something to happen?

Well we haven't really gotten any updates from G'town to discuss. Should we be getting our class assignments soon? I feel like the answer is yes, but I don't quite remember when they said it would be.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
