epic grade inflation
I have about a 3.7 from my UG. on my LSDAS report it says this GPA is 56th percentile for my school. I didn't realize the grade inflation was that bad here - to what extent is that going to cheapen my GPA in the eyes of adcomms? will they still look at it as a legit 3.7, or have a tendency to laugh it off?

Re: epic grade inflation
yeah I guess median would have to be a 3.6x, which seems heinously high. although, maybe there's some self-selective strengthening going on because that's the GPA scale for students applying to law school, not just the student body at large.
of course, there's probably a similar sort of effect at every UG and not just mine

Re: epic grade inflation
Relative baby made my day.
My school also has a mean UPGA at 3.6, which is kind of embarrassing. (We might've determined in an earlier thread that we go to the same place?)
I think it has to do with the grading policy here, combined w/ a fair bit of inflation.
I'm hoping (self-interestedly) that schools don't care.

Doesn't that number only account for students applying to law schools, not the entire student body?

I believe it is people who have sent transcripts to LSAC.. Who intend to apply to law schools.airefresco wrote:Doesn't that number only account for students applying to law schools, not the entire student body?

Re: epic grade inflation
No not absurd. A 3.5 at Yale and Harvard would have 10 LSAT points higher on average than a 3.8 in some low tier state school. Yet, law school seems that the 3.5 is inferior even though it's harder to get that 3.5.
If anything, top UGs are grade deflated, using LSAT as adjuster.
LSAC needs to have a school adjustment factor for GPA.

Re: epic grade inflation
Well whichever way LSAC makes the policy its never going to be completely fair.. I mean the whole two numbers = 90% of your application makes things the way it is.. Not much we can do about it I guess.Black-Blue wrote:No not absurd. A 3.5 at Yale and Harvard would have 10 LSAT points higher on average than a 3.8 in some low tier state school. Seems fair to me. Pretty much everyone who goes to Michigan or Texas or BC would go to Harvard or Yale if they could (excluding the fact that some people like to watch and be a part of the sports scene and the fact that some people wouldn't want to be the dumbest person at their school).
If anything Harvard and Yale should have a 3.7 or 3.8 average.

Anyone who thinks top UGs suffer from "deflation" is an elitist troll.

What would be the point of adjusting UGPA's based on UG LSAT? At that point you might as well just forget the UGPA...

I wonder whether adcomms consider grade inflation when evaluating grades from 10 or more years ago.
