"Oh ****, there's a typo on my application" Commiseration

Post by amputatedbrain » Tue Oct 20, 2009 9:24 pm

So I was looking over my already transmitted UC Berkeley app and discovered to my horror a glaring typo. I should have just sent in my normal PS, but I added two extra pages that, while actually very relevant, probably just killed that app. I was in a rush to get it out and didn't do enough proofreading, and my mind sort of filled in the mistake reading it to myself. This is sort of a misery-loves-company thread. Anyone out there want to commiserate?

Reviewed my UCLA app and found that one of the paragraph sections I had replaced all of the apostrophes with &asd or something similar to that. I thought it was my fault when I saw it so I sent a letter to UCLA amending it. Then, I found it happens to a lot of applications.

Annoyed and sad.

Everybody relax. I made a worse mistake than a typo on my application to the school I currently attend and it didn't keep me out. The admission committees know we're human and make mistakes and account for that. Some might get snippy if you send them a P.S. with the wrong school name in it or something, but a simple typo may not even be noticed, let alone be decisive for your application.

I understand most schools won't really care too much if you misplace a comma or forget to capitalize something, but I accidentally cut off the last word in a sentence, and it doesn't really make a ton of sense the way its written. Hopefully the mind of who ever is reading it will mentally gloss over it or something.

dude, it's fine - there's no way you're going to get rejected for one bum sentence

Typo in my Why Duke essay, "of" instead of "for" when referring to one of their Centers. Initially was worried about it, then I woke up the next morning and figured, "meh, could be worse"

Phew...I thought it was just me. I left off a period at the end of a sentence on my GMU application.

I never, ever look at my applications once they've been sent. If there are typos, I can't do shit about it, so I don't want to know.

The first mistake of this thread is the idea that your Personal Statement matters to them, and is a decent factor in their overall decision.

Trust me, if you leave out 1 word but have a 3.8 GPA I think they wont give two flying shits.

I forgot a word in my personal statements to Virginia, Chicago, and Duke. I just emailed all of them and they were happy to replace my PS with the one I sent them. But for all of you worried about typos:

In my Duke app, I made the aforementioned typo in addition to two glaring punctuation issues in my "Why Duke?" essay. I got accepted to Duke in 21 hours. Four days later I got an email for the admissions office saying they've replaced my two essays, but I already should have had a decision. So apparently they didn't care that I was borderline illiterate.

Thank god I left the schools I really want to attend until later.

It was about geography, really. Not how good the schools are. Put Duke in the Bay Area and I'm there.
