It's a good article but as others have pointed out it doesn't belong in this thread at all. It's an article about the realities of employment for most law graduates pre-the bad economy.

Any optimism in this kind of market is foolhardy.

That was a rather terse first post.

I like the kid. He saw an opportunity to set the tone, and pounced on it. Plus, how can you argue with him? Brilliant. Simply brilliant.DAC wrote:CE2JD wrote:That was a rather terse first post.

statistics is not your strong suit'04 Grad wrote:First of all, the assumption that because the median is $70K that it's safe to assume you'll make $70K is wrong. Law grads don't typically make salaries in the middle. A few are on the high end and the majority are on the low end.

I almost corrected you - until it turned out that you weren't in need of being corrected.

I'm hoping that 4 possibly 5 years will be long enough to get the market back for a newly minted law grad. If not I'll need a new method to getting the beauty in my avatar.

Hi, skadden, it's Josephine from JDU, which isnot working right now. I decided to register for TLS becasue it's such a popular topic at JDU.

Eh, I think he was banned, but he pops up using various alts from time to time. JDU's kind of been on the decline lately. We get much more traffic from XOXO lately.Josephine wrote:Hi, skadden, it's Josephine from JDU, which isnot working right now. I decided to register for TLS becasue it's such a popular topic at JDU.

On the recession megapost, I figured I'd throw a bit in. I bumped into a guy who went to law school in my undergrad (around the 60's-70's in the rank), and finished in the top 5%, and has recently been given a pink slip. I've been talking to him about law school and all that (he was an 07 grad, or right about) and it's not really motivating. I think he should not be worrying about a job at that level, if he is actually being truthful.

Uhhh... I don't blame the guy you talked to for being worried.sporkdevil wrote:On the recession megapost, I figured I'd throw a bit in. I would be absolutely terrified right now if I didn't have a technical degree, 3 years of work technical work experience, and a top 10 law school acceptance. Take away any of those 3 and there's NO WAY IN HELL I would go to law school. Shit, I almost didn't go despite my current situation.
I don't think people on this board realize that people would literally kill each other for VOLUNTEER WORK at this point in the legal field. Think about that for a minute. Do you know of any other field in which people would fight so hard to be fucking volunteers???? It's unbelievable.

And yes, there are other fields where this is the case but they're mostly glamor fields. That being said, everyone who complains about big law whines about how they are awesome but get passed over for the incompetent/equally competent guy with the Harvard degree.
I plan to be that incompetent guy with the Harvard degree that they are passed over for!

Wow. If you are being serious, I think this might be the douchiest post in Internet history. "I'm going to Harvard so I'll automatically get picked over others for raises / partnership." Even if it's true, you shouldn't go around rubbing it in other peoples' faces.
Asshole.

And while we're on the topic of elitism, it looks like this guy's Yale law degree:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... 03115.html
didn't really stop him from getting laid off by this chick:

who went to UVA. Oh, and uh... apparently going to YLS also doesn't keep you from killing self when getting laid off.

How do you think high economy cars, like the Prius, will work as taxi cabs? There's a push in New York to replace many of the taxi cabs with high fuel economy vehicle. But, I have to wonder how these cars are going to handle regularly carrying the weight of five adults. That's going to run 1000+ lbs of weight, along with the constant use of the AC system, which is required when Temperatures run over 85 degrees.

Oh no! Lawyer is only America's 16th best-paying job.

We should have all gone to med school. Or CEO school.
