Hopefully that sound wasn't nearly as loud as the ensuing celebration! Congrats!

Good to know I'm not the only one! Congratz on Chicago, eh. Any chance you'd take it over Darrow?Tangerine Gleam wrote:Nope! Seems to be taking a while for everybody.tamlyric wrote:I don't suppose anyone who got the call last week has already received their Darrow letter in the mail yet?

Congrats on the Darrow, guys.
Michigan is a fantastic school. Especially if it's free.

Re: Darrow Invite
While in the shower, something rather simple dawned on me concerning the Darrow.
Having an offer for "full tuition" is very different from a flat number -- i.e. 45k/year. Darrow scholars would be immune to any tuition increases, which might be significant in coming years. Everyone has been shocked by Boalt's increases, but they claim that theirs are be in line with what many of their peers will likely do in the coming years.
I hope this isn't true in the case of UM, but either way -- something to think about.

Re: Darrow Invite
Good point. Let's assume that the average T14 costs $45,000 a year this year. I recall seeing on Chicago's website that we should expect a 5% increase in tuition each year. This is significantly higher than the rate of inflation in most years, so law school is becoming more expensive no matter how you look at it.Tangerine Gleam wrote:Having an offer for "full tuition" is very different from a flat number -- i.e. 45k/year. Our 0L tuition (which we obviously won't pay): 45,000
1L: 47,250
2L: 49,613
3L: 52,093
That law school that appears to cost $135k over 3 years (45 x 3) would actually cost $149k. Some schools may increase their tuition faster than 5% each year as well. Someone correct me if my understanding of LS tuition is wrong.
Law.com article wrote:The ABA tracks tuition at U.S. law schools but has not yet collected data for the 2009-10 academic year. During the 2008-09 school year, the average public school tuition for resident students grew by 9% to $16,836. The increase was 7% for average out-of-state tuition at public schools and 6% at private law schools.

Re: Darrow Invite
My knowledge of the process is - Dean Z selects people to invite for the scholarship application, she then sends them invites via e-mail and gives them 2 weeks to submit the essay. The essay along with the application is sent to the committee, and the committee meets around 2 weeks (or less) after the essay submission deadline. Scholarship offers are made on the same day or within a couple of days of the committee meeting.jackassjim wrote:Do you guys know how often the committee that is in charge of giving out scholarships meets?

Essentially they'll only meet if a batch of invites has gone out. Since there were 3 batches of invites till now (i think), they've met 3 times. HTH.

Re: Darrow Invite
Just noticed that you asked about generic scholarships, the above described process is only for the Darrow. I assumed that's what you were referencing since you posted in this thread. I have no idea about Dean's scholarships and the like. Why not just mail them to ask whether they're done awarding $$?ankit wrote:My knowledge of the process is - Dean Z selects people to invite for the scholarship application, she then sends them invites via e-mail and gives them 2 weeks to submit the essay. Thanks for the reply Ankit. I guess I'm not too sure what the role of this committee is.

Re: Darrow Invite
Congrats!
EDIT: Something else to consider for Darrow folk. Go to this site: http://www.finaid.org/calculators/loanpayments.phtml
Enter the expected tuition + COL of your other choices. Play around with payment terms (10 vs. 20 vs. 30 years) and check out how much paying sticker will really cost you.
