Grad degree for fun

Post by AUSA3B » Tue Jan 21, 2025 9:31 pm

I’m a government attorney (prosecutor) in NYC with 10ish years experience.

I am considering getting a graduate degree in law/policy purely for my own edification—there would be no tangible career benefit.

My thought is based on two assumptions, and would like to confirm those assumptions in this thread.

1. Since I work in public interest, would I be eligible for 10-year loan forgiveness, even if the degree (e.g. MPA) has no tangible career benefit?

2. If loan forgiveness is not a possibility, how likely is it to get a scholarship at Columbia? I’ve been looking at the Executive LLM and the Executive MPA?

If both answers are a no, then I cannot see how I would proceed with this idea at this stage in life.

3. If 1 or 2 is possible, how realistic is it to incorporate part time study with a 9-5 government gig?

As an alternative, I am also considering the CORO program. I applied in the past and was a finalist. I find the cost (10ish k) manageable. Does anyone have any insight into this program?
