law school after phd in hard science and research experience (low GPA) Forum

I have been working as a postdoc after a PhD in physics for some time.
I am considering going to law school (always thought about it even before the start of undergraduate) after doing a few more years of research either continuing as a postdoc/research scientist or maybe even becoming a professor.
My undergrad GPA is well below the median (3.79) for the schools I would like to get into though (the top half of T14).
Both my undergrad and grad school are considered tier 1 in their general reputation and also in my field, but I heard it doesn't mean anything since law schools care about hard metrics (LSAT and GPA).
Given my low GPA, is taking the LSAT a must for me, to have a shot at getting into the top half of T14?
I have a decent publication record and have some exposure to the startup scene, plus some involvement with the defense sector (I am not a veteran though).
Just trying to figure out if I should just take the GRE and hope for the best or study for the LSAT.
When I took the GRE 10 years ago, I scored very well but after spending some time lurking around on the Internet, it seems like reporting a GRE score is only acceptable if your GPA is above the median for the law school you are interested in.
