App question: list other schools
One of my applications asks me to list all of the other schools I'm applying to. What impact does this have?

At most, it might increase your chances at being waitlisted for yield protection. For example, if this is a question on [Insert State Flagship Here], and you list a bunch of T13 schools (assuming you have the numbers to back up those apps), they might be more inclined to think that you won't go there, even if admitted with a good scholarship.
But this question is most likely for the admissions department to get a sense of how applicants think of their school.

Yeah, it's not going to impact your application. Schools ask this to find out their competition. If 90% of applicants to school X also apply to school Y, then school X can adjust its marketing to better compete with school Y. Changes over time can suggest how that marketing is working. Stuff like that. It's not schools trying to read the tea leaves about you.
It is possible that it could contribute to yield protection, but you overcome that the same way you overcome any other YP, by showing specific/particularized interest in the school.
