On the GRE

Post by Kantian1 » Sun Jun 14, 2020 12:56 pm

Hello! I've recently decided to apply to law school this upcoming cycle. I've taken the GRE already (was originally planning on applying to graduate school in philosophy) and am unsure if I should take the LSAT as well. My GRE scores are 170 Verbal, 161 Quant, and 6 Writing (99th percentile, 76th percentile, and 99th percentile, respectively). Would it be wise to take the LSAT? Thanks everyone for your help!

Brief addendum:
I'm planning on applying across the T-14, and I am a URM with a 4.0 GPA.

Your Verbal and Writing scores are pretty strong. It seems enough to bring you into many prestigious schools. Though you can do better in the Q session. If you are still uncertain about your chance, there is a reddit poll which might give you a hint:

Although only Berkeley has been open about it, the GRE is generally not helpful if you're not applying with a few years of experience in another field (usually STEM). In your case, you shouldn't be cutting off options anyway, and as a URM with a 4.0, a decent LSAT will put basically every school in play.

For the numerous schools that accept the GRE, your scores are superb. Overwhelming majority of T14 scores accept the GRE. Duke will announce same in August. Only downside of the GRE is that money is awarded to LSAT takers; this is how they get high LSAT scores for the rankings. If money is not the issues, GRE may actually be helpful as they can take people with lower scores without impacting Lsat ranking.

Thanks, everyone! I decided to sit this cycle out and study for the LSAT.
