LOCI- what to disclose?

Post by Ccsah5 » Wed Mar 18, 2020 8:19 pm

Hello,

I am looking for some guidance regarding a letter of continued interest. My significant other matched at a 3 year medical residency program in a region where we currently do not live. I applied to the one law school in the region he matched at (in preparation!) but was waitlisted at that law school. There is only one law school within ~3.5-4hours of the hospital he matched at. Not ideal, but here we are. I was waitlisted at this one school. I plan to retake the LSAT in April (so long as it’s still on as scheduled), as I think that’s why I got waitlisted. Do you think I should disclose in my LOCI that I have a pull to that area? I don’t know if it will help or hurt me. In my mind hurt, as I don’t necessarily feel a strong pull to the school so much as I do to the area where the school is. That’s not to say I wouldn’t be happy going to that law school, it’s just that it would not be my top choice even if it weren’t for my significant others match. What do you think? We also plan to settle down in the region where he matched, (and where that law school is) after his residency and my law school because he’s from that area. Any advice? Thank you!

I don't know if this will help you at all, probably not, but I do know this is a discussion on the medical school side. For people who are applying to medical school, it's usually encouraged to divulge such information. You're on the wait list for a reason, they didn't just outright deny you. For medical school applicants, it has always helped for the admission committee to know that you will be 100% committed to attending that school if accepted.
In my mind, it would be the same for law school. You were interested enough to apply in the first place and they were interested enough in you to place you on the wait list. Notifying them that you have a tie to the area and are planning to retake the LSAT should help, not hurt. But, I am not on an admission committee, so take my comment as you wish.

I imagine this would either help or not make a difference. Obviously sugar-coat your explanation -- my partner will be doing his residency nearby and we plan to settle locally afterward, as his family is from around these parts -- is a pretty good tie to an area in my book.

Agreed with non-anon. You should go ahead and tell them that your SO is doing a residency in the area and you both want to settle there. No reason to say you're not excited about the school itself.
