Undergrad student (class of '23) seeking advice

Post by floridaboi » Thu Aug 01, 2019 9:14 pm

Hey! So this is going to be my first year at university, attending FSU. In my senior year of HS, I became really interested in pursuing law as a potential career. However, as i've been scouring the internet for any information I can get my hands on about law school, GPA requirements and LSAT scores, i've come across several posts that made me realize the serious dedication and hard work i'm going to have to put in these next 4 years of my life and onward. I stumbled across this site while exploring law schools, and have browsed through some posts yet I haven't been able to find proper advice for someone who is at my current position in life (really just starting my life lol).

ALSO, I come from a relatively socioeconomic background and financial decisions are at the top priority for my education. For example, the only reason I chose FSU over my local uni was because FSU offered me more money. Personally, I don't plan to go into law if it means not getting into a top school, not because of "prestige" and all that but I feel that if I don't get into a top law school then the financial risk I would be putting myself in would be unfeasible.

Anyways, any advice from current/prospective/graduated law students would be very appreciated and could very well help me find direction in these next 4 years. From what I understand, your undergrad GPA and LSAT scores are the 2 most important factors in law school admissions. If anyone would care to add any further information on how my undergrad major (political science) and school have an impact on my admission into a top law school, i'm willing to take any responses I get, honestly. :)

Don't worry about the LSAT or law school until your senior year at the earliest. Focus on school and having fun. Major doesn't matter for law school, so pick one that you like and that you can get a job with if you change your mind, which is likely.

In a few years, if you're still interested in law school, study hard for the LSAT etc. But don't gear your college career towards law school. That'd be a waste of a really cool gun time in your life, and it would be counterproductive.

I agree but would add that you should avoid a non-employment related class that could drag down your overall GPA. So, let's say you're a computer science major and math isn't your strong point. If the school only requires you take discrete math, you might not want to take an optional calculus class.

Similarly, if there's an easy elective that you're confident can get you an A grade, pursue it.

But make all those decisions based on keeping other options open. You sound like you're young and have only recently considered law seriously as an option. You could still change your mind.

Thank you so much! I wasn’t really given any of that advice when speaking to my college advisors.
