Need Advice On Taking A Class P/NP!!

Post by calmova17 » Fri Oct 27, 2017 1:30 pm

Hi everyone!

I'm currently a junior English major at Cal. One of my literature classes is incredibly challenging, and a majority of the students are struggling. I want to go to law school, and my GPA is currently a 3.9. I'm trying to keep it pretty high for obvious reasons. I talked to my GSI and while getting a B in that class would be a serious achievement (can't emphasize how hard it's been), but I know the admissions don't know that, and thus don't care. I can't decide if it's better to take the class P/NP to keep my GPA up, or take a (potentially) B range grade. It's an elective class for my major, but still within my major, so I don't know how that will look. It would be the only P/NP class I end up taking if I choose to switch, but I'm just struggling! Please help! Thank you

Law schools care much more about GPA than some weird notion of academic honor. As long as your transcript isn't littered with P/F courses, take the option and keep that stellar GPA.

I took 8 classes P/F, had a lower GPA, and got into all of the T14 but HYS. You'll be fine.

You should be fine with 1 or a few P's on your transcript. As others have said, as long as you don't have an excessive amount you should be fine.

I have 1 P on my transcript and it looks so much better than the C or D I was going to get in that class. Only reason I did the Pass/fail option was because schools don't care about 1 P, so you'll be fine!
