Question about a NP i received a couple of years ago

Post by pleaseberkeley » Tue May 02, 2017 9:04 pm

In 2014 I received a NP for a lower division math class worth 2.5 units. The class was called Math 55A. Next semester, I took the full 55 course and passed it with a "P". Then after, I took an even higher math course. I understand that Withdraws don't count against you unless they are "WF", and I understand that 55A's NP does count against me. However, considering math builds, and I clearly learned the skills to advance, will they look at that in a less punitive manner? Will the context of the situation be taken into account? Or, is it as detrimental as any other "NP"?

They don't evaluate it on a class by class basis. The issue is that the NP will get calculated into your overall grade as an F for the number of credits the class was worth, which will lower your GPA, which is what schools have to report for USNWR rankings.

Wait, are you saying they won't look at the transcript? They just look at the GPA?

They will *look* at the transcript, but what matters is the GPA.

(And I mean, you learned the skills to advance by taking the same class twice, so I'm not sure it looks any better than any other NP.)

Think of it this way: they get literally thousands of transcripts every year they need to examine. What do you think the chances are they'll dive deep into the particulars of your transcript looking for nuggets to suggest your GPA has some hidden reason for being what it is. They don't really have time for that, so they'll take your GPA mostly at face value unless something drastic stands out like a semester of straight Ds/Fs surrounded mostly by As/Bs.

Lesson learned- don't take no for an answer and keep fighting

I got it changed, I spoke to my teacher. Extenuating circumstances, etc.
