Is being a 1st generation college student a soft?

Post by basketweaver » Mon Apr 24, 2017 4:43 pm

Hey all

I was just curious if being the first person in your family to go to/graduate from university as a small soft (family is pretty blue collar)?

Thanks!

It's a diversity factor, so it's a "soft" in that sense.

+1. Definitely apply to all the UCs (Berkeley, UCLA, Irvine, Davis, Hastings).

Yep, some of the apps will have a whole section about it.

I agree with the previous poster who implied it helps if you have it work for you. Just checking a box will vary with the school but if you use it to create a compelling application re: PS, LORs, etc. I think it is likely to be better received.

Would it be more beneficial to discuss it in a PS or in a diversity statement?

Just be certain to apply early. Berkeley apparently hates later applicants.

Source: my application as a first gen college grad from CA above both 75ths who applied the last possible week with a Why X statement and ended up rejected. Not at all bitter.
