Why do they ask family info? Would it matter?

Hi,
It seems answering is optional but...
Why do they ask those info? Would it affect the decision?
Do you answer optional questions?

Some schools like first in the family to go to college students.
Just another soft.

I answered, although my answers likely won't matter at all in their decision.

I see...but some schools seem only ask contact info.
Wonder why :?

Probably just to pre-populate any emergency contact forms. Or they're stalking you. Or it's for the NSA. Or maybe, just maybe, you're overthinking this.
