I don't understand this question at all. If you have questions that can't be answered by looking at the status checker or searching google, email them or call them (not recommended). Otherwise, just wait for a decision?

I'm not sure what you mean by an open line of communication. When necessary, I've sent updates to my application with a short, polite note, and I've always received responses back. Same goes for questions I had during the application process. What else are you really looking for beyond that?
