Just to slightly complicate the last answer, you could conceivably be "penalized" by refusing to note that you were, for example, African American. There's a known boost to AA applicants, so not indicating that would definitely be a drawback.

Then again, I imagine mainly white people are offended by the question, so this is probably a moot point.

Asian-Americans are known to be disadvantaged when applying to top schools. I wonder if there is an advantage then to them declining to answer.
