Would it help to wear school gear during my law school visit?

Post by Doubting Law » Thu May 26, 2016 4:15 pm

Would the admissions officers giving me a tour of their law school notice or care if I was wearing say a hat, or shirt of the school being visited? Or would they assume that I was trying too hard to make a good first impression?

you're really overthinking it. no one cares. i personally wouldn't, because it would come off as being "that guy"

edit: if it's like a flagship state school with powerhouse sports teams (i.e. Michigan, USC, Texas, etc), then it's more acceptable and probably common. but if it's like WUSTTTL or UChicago, then definitely no

I know a guy who got rejected from a T-90 for being too enthusiastic about a school at his non-admitted students day visit, but I also heard of a guy at a T-34 who got accepted because he got a face tattoo of the school mascot. Seems like it varies.

I would actually recommend wearing a shirt from any of HYS. That way the school you're touring knows you mean BUSINESS. If they make one that says "J.D. Class of 2019 ADMITTED STUDENT" I would spring for that one as well, even if it costs a few extra bucks.

Terrible advice in this thread. Terrible. Honestly guys, don't fuck with the kid -- dress code at a school visit is very important.

You need to send the right message. Attitude, posture, fragrance, clothing. It all matters. Big time.

I'm thinking dress pants, expensive dress shoes shirt and tie with a law school shirt on top of the dress shirt/tie. Be sure to carry a binder with the logo of your U-grad on it (only if your u-grad is prestigious). If it isn't, a regular brief case will do. Have lots of pens and take a ton of notes. Ask questions non-stop. Especially if you're in a group tour. If they give a mock class, answer everything. Everything. Even if there is no question put to you; answer a question anyway. If you're not speaking at least 70% MORE THAN the professor; you're doing it wrong.

Go get em slugger. This is yours to lose.

Do not wear school gear. Wear a suit. If you are male, wear a tie.

You want your appearance to stand out from those who will be wearing gym shorts and bro tanks.

Sorry for messing with you man. I think as aspiring law students/law students/attorneys everyone here has and continues to regularly overthink things. It seems like a trait of a lot of legal minded people. This forum is full of really specific questions about legal world etiquette and after reading for awhile it's enough to make you believe anything and everything matters. Visit the school and enjoy yourself.

Haha I lost it reading this. It was so serious and then...BOOM... the wear a law school shirt on top of the suit and tie line caught me out of nowhere. Bravo.

I aim to please (and usually miss).. so thanks :D

Seriously though OP - just having a little fun at your expense. Don't worry about your dress code too much. Go find out if you like the school. That's the most important part of the visit.

I would just dress well, be confident and out going, but don't be that prick who tries to be overly friendly and is always talking/answering questions obnoxiously being a try-hard "know it all." Have a presence and mean business.
