Simply get admitted and go? I doubt most people have much money going in.

If you mean before-hand? That's a question of life and how to not starve.

Get a full scholarship + cost of living stipend or loans for Cost of living.

A lot of people go to law school with 0 savings

Study, have a high GPA, and a high LSAT score. Get a named scholarship with a living stipend.

And anybody should be able to acquire the couple of thousand dollars needed to relocate and get an apartment. If you can get into a "top law school," you should be able to get a part-time job at Walmart and live frugally for 6 months.

"Get a full scholarship" isn't realistic advice if OP is referring to T14s. It takes a lot more than high numbers to get a full ride at a T14, and even then, the scholarship probably won't cover cost of living, books, and fees.

HYS need-based aid is actually pretty great for people who have $0 to their name.

People working part time at Wal-Mart can't save money. After rent, bus fare, food, etc. there is nothing left to save.

I'm coming out of UG where I'm living on-campus and I need a whopping $5,000 to move cross-country and another $4,000 to pay my rent in SF before my student loans kick in at the top law school I've been accepted to. I'm currently selling everything in my house on Craigslist, eBay and Amazon. I've sold my kitchen table, bicycles, bed frame, textbooks, and now I'm selling my engagement ring. Anyone wanna buy something? Hit me up, lol.

If you're selling your possessions, why will it cost $5000 to move to California?

And obviously I'm generalizing, but I think the average T14 admit should be able to scrape together a few thousand dollars. Most can get a job that pays better than Walmart, and if they can't, then they can at least live with their parents while they save money.

No sad back story, I just didn't want to get married. It's been years. My future is reserved for me and my cats.

I'm downsizing from a two-bedroom to a one-bedroom. I've been getting quotes online: a truck to fit a one bedroom apartment from Uhaul, east coast to west coast, plus a trailer to tow my car, is a staggering $3,800 and that is before you factor in gas, which is around $600-$700. Plus there is about $100 in hotel costs for 4-5 nights. I was completely blown away by that price. I figured a UHaul would be the cheapest option. I'm looking into PODS and other storage box type movers, but they are also expensive. If you have any tips, let me know!

I'm looking at this same move (Boston to SF/Berkeley), and I've decided that it'll be cheaper to just sell what I can in Boston and buy it all again in SF. I'll be mailing myself the clothes+ personal items I really need+ trying to make it work without the car if I can (planning to just uber/lyft/car share whenever I need a car).

I haven't made a move like this before, so I'm not really sure how it'll go, but I think it makes a lot of sense and avoids a lot of hassle (especially if you're hoping to end up back on the east coast after school, since that'll require the same move again)

Edit: what they ^ said lol

For a coast to coast move, the cheapest pod-type thing will run you about $2.5K (the U-haul one is the cheapest I believe; it's really small, though), which does not include expenses for packaging materials and movers (I do recommend getting someone who has experience with packing these things up if you do this). It'll take roughly two weeks for your pod to show up on the other side of the country. Back of the envelope calculation led me to conclude that it would've cost around the same to buy everything new, which, given the hassle that the latter involves--a 1 bedroom, unlike a room in a shared house, requires a lot of little things to make it livable, and --in terms of going to all kinds of places to buy shit, struck me as not worth it. But if you have no love for your furniture and other household items and don't mind the effort, selling/dumping your stuff and getting everything new on the other side is probably the way to go.

Look into Amtrak express shipping. They let you ship up to 500lbs per individual shipment and it's something like $67 for the first 100lbs and then .57 for every additional pound. There are some restrictions on things like appliances, but I bet you could make it work if you have a little room in your car.

FYI Budget trucks are generally cheaper than UHaul, and you can almost always get a coupon code for them if you do some digging online as well.

This might be unreasonable advice, but if things are really that tight, I would just live extremely frugally (i.e., no furniture or anything that couldn't fit in a suitcase or carry-on bag) until loan funds came in.

Thanks for all the tips! I ended up doing the smallest U-Haul truck available. Budget was definitely cheaper - but their smallest truck cannot tow a car. I'm bringing my car along because it is a vintage/hobby car that I've poured a lot of love into. Otherwise, I would have ditched my car before living in the Bay Area. FYI, PODS ended up being the most expensive, while ABF offered the cheapest storage box moving situation. But once I calculated my car towing costs into it, a storage box ended up being more expensive than the U-Haul + auto transport. So, in the end, U-Haul it is.
