Any other cases like this?

Post by Saul27 » Fri May 20, 2016 5:15 pm

Accepted with full ride all three years, no academic stipulations, on Dean's Merit Scholarship at Villanova. Waitlisted, then accepted at Temple Law with no scholarship despite writing a letter of continued interest, visiting school, and attempting to negotiate for a merit-based scholarship. Is this a unique case considering the two are peers schools?

This definitely seems to be something that seems to happen when you look at mylsn. It definitely seems to occur more outside of the tier one schools.
I would try to negotiate and get the $$$ you want if you're set on going to Temple. Although both aren't very good schools as far as employment stats go.

What was your GPA and LSAT? also, how many times have you taken if you don't mind me asking?

Villanova's median is 156 and Temple's is 160. Do you fall between the two? That would definitely explain it.

Not to be a smartass here, but I've seen signs at Drexel (where I did my undergrad) that villanova just gives out free rides to everyone. It's possible you weren't qualified for the full ride but just got your hand in the villanova free-ride candy dish.

I had very strong softs, took the lsat twice and underperformed on both (157, then 158). My gpa is a 3.8.

Was accepted with a 15k scholarship a year to BU and got into some other T1/T2 schools ranked above temple, but still no scholarship. Attempted to negotiate with a letter already and was rejected.

yeah the villanova free ride sounds more and more like just a flukey thing villanova does and not really worth much against other schools. probably why temple wasn't impressed by it.

You're going to have to retake for Temple money and score 160+.

Agree that your LSAT was too low for scholarship from Temple, and that your LSAT &/or GPA may be above those for Villanova this application cycle.

Thank you for the responses. I am still a bit confused because my GPA was above Temple's 75th and my LSAT was between their 25-50th. I received a full ride from Seton Hall as well, and accepted at sticker to Fordham and BC. I guess Temple is just stingy with money?

Maybe, but you're also below median. Your GPA won't make up for your low LSAT. LSATs are simply more valuable.
If you really want Temple or Philly market, retake.
Or move on and take one of the full rides (knowing that you chances of practicing law, let alone in whatever field you want, may be diminished).
