When to start securing letter of rec. for this cycle?

Post by olikatz » Sat May 07, 2016 9:53 pm

I'm graduating in a few weeks and will start applying in November. I just wanted to know when would be the right time to submit them to LSAC? Is this something I should be doing now before I graduate?

Do it now while your recommenders still remember you. It doesn't matter how long it sits in your LSAC file. You can use your recommendations years later.

Now. Get them into LSAC and then you don't have to worry and/or harass slacking professors later.

Letters of rec remain in your LSAC account "indefinitely"/foreverish.

Do it now. I'm applying this upcoming cycle as well and just asked my recommenders a few days ago.

ASAP. Having apps all set to go but waiting on letters is the absolute worst.

I am also wondering this. I have a couple of professors I was closer with and took 3 classes or so with. I was also wondering how long they take on average. I'm sure it varies quite a bit, but were I to ask next week, how long am I going to be waiting?

Just wondering how many to get? I know some school require 2-3, but lets say I can get 5 letters. Can I send all 5 to LSAC and then the schools will pick 2-3 at random?

You pick which letters you assign to each school.

I had like 10 letters total and assigned different letters to different schools. For example, on my U of Michigan application, I had a family friend who is a very involved UM law alum write a letter for me and I obviously only sent that letter to UM and no one else. I had several school specific letters like that (not all were written by alumni of that particular school tho) that I sent out in additon to my professor-written recommendations. I probably had 4 or 5 prof letters and 5 or 6 school specific letters.
Also, in the case that you get waitlisted, it's sometimes beneficial to have an extra letter in your back pocket that you can send an Admissions Committee in addition to your LOCI, so it might be worth while to get an extra letter or two.
I realize I probably over did it with my LORs but whatever haha I used them all by the time the cycle was over

Excessive and unnecessary, I know lol but my applications were tailored super specifically to every school I applied.

It's hard to say. I had a much better cycle this time but my lsat was also much better. Fwiw I got accepted at several schools where I was below both medians and I'm also a white guy, so Im sure they helped at least a little bit. During an interview, my interviewer actually commented on the strength of my letters, so they were aware of them
