Is my first degree going to screw me over?

Post by jcanary » Thu May 05, 2016 7:50 am

I graduated with my first BA in 2012 with a 3.0. After 19 years working in the same field, I was burnt out in that field so I took a year off to figure out what I actually wanted to do with my life, so I went back to school.

This coming fall I'll be graduating with two BS' with my gpa somewhere around a 3.8. Is the gpa from my first degree going to seriously hinder what schools I'll be competitive at because of the LSAC gpa or will they be calculated as separate gpas?

Sadly, yes.

For ranking purposes, schools report your Undergrad GPA at the time you complete your Bachelors degree. Any coursework taken after this point could be considered a soft, but is likely to receive little attention as it will not be factored into their rankings.

I would read this. Law schools won't calculate your GPA themselves; you'll submit your transcripts to LSAC, and they will calculate your GPA. That's the number that schools will care about.

Just like Haus mentioned, your LSAC GPA will only be your grades that you received prior to being granted your first degree.
