UGA $$$ vs. Emory$$$
Hey dudes,
I'm debating between UGA and Emory and have to put down seat deposits Asap. I'm leaning toward UGA. Just want your thoughts. My tuition for both schools would be about 5k a year and total COA 52k for UGA and 72k for UGA. Either way I should be able to go debt free. I want to practice atlanta biglaw or clerk (i know i should have gone to duke or vandy, but these are my options)...

Emory gives you a much better shot at biglaw than UGA does. Not a great shot compared to T14 - but you didn't list those as options so...

UGAs big firm + clerkship is around 20%. Emory's was around 30%. If you know you only want to stay in GA I would go UGA because I think their Atlanta placement and placement in Georgia generally is probably pretty similar. If you do really well though Emory does open up NY big law in a way that UGA really doesn't. If you only want big law and aren't going to retake you just need to decide if 20k for an extra 10% shot at big law is worth it. Overall employment numbers between the two though after big law seem relatively similar when you factor in Emory seems to have a lot of school funded jobs.
Edit: I'm a 3L at UGA and don't want to paint an overly rosy picture. If you only want to do big law or clerk your odds obviously aren't too great.

if the cost is roughly equal between the two, sounds like its a decision between athens and atlanta, atlanta would be my choice.

Yeah retaking isn't really an option I lucked out with a 170 but got waitlisted everywhere i applied except uga, emory and texas. Emory's school funded jobs definitely freaks me out and I'm now I'm thinking about deferring and reapplying or something. Thanks for the advice though, I appreciate it.lawhopeful10 wrote:UGAs big firm + clerkship is around 20%. Emory's was around 30%. Check their latest employment stats, released just a few days ago, their school funded rate went down by a good bit. Don't remember the exact number, but it was significant.yungthug wrote:Yeah retaking isn't really an option I lucked out with a 170 but got waitlisted everywhere i applied except uga, emory and texas. Edit: just checked, it went from 22% to 12%.
