It's really hard to say exactly what it means beyond the idea that there's a world in which they would be willing to have you at their school. Schools waitlist a lot of applicants generally, so you can't conclude a ton from just the waitlist. The only advice is to show continued interest, retake the LSAT, and be patient.

Hi guys,

so far i have been waitlisted at chicago columbia and cornell. applied in January.

i am URM, have a strong GPA and Softs, but my LSAT is a few points below what a URM should have for t14.

What exactly does waitlist mean does it mean i was close to being accepted had i just had a few more points on my lsat?
thus if i retake and boost my score a few points and re-apply earlier next cycle (october) would i have a good shot at those schools?

and what are my chances of getting off those waitlists? slim to none?

Being on a waitlist means that you're on a list with other people who have a chance of getting in if the school needs to fill more seats, or needs a more diverse class in some cases. Since you're URM, you can probably get off the waitlist at those schools if they need a more diverse class later on when those who were actually admitted, do not choose to attend.

What is your LSAT score and GPA? If you want to retake and then apply next cycle with a better LSAT score than what you have now, that may be a good idea considering there's a good chance you may not be getting any $ if you get off of the waitlist at one of those schools.

It's really hard to tell. The best way to max out your odds of getting in are to write LOCIs and just sit on the WL for a really long time. Most of the movement on WLs comes at the end of the summer so if you're able sit around and tolerate uncertainty about where you'll attend law school you could get some huge accepts. Remember, as unpleasant as being on the WL is, it's just as bad for your competition.
